Glenn, what year was the Model 5 made ?
The finish for Model 5's made from the late fifties to the early seventies should be a light oil finish, although after about sixty-eight the general tone changed to crap.....way too many corners were cut.
The best were made between fifty-six and sixty-two(personally I believe the 1958 Brno model 5 is the absolute pinnacle).
A couple of things that you may not be aware of when buying/using early Brno .22 lr, first up the bolt face on quite a few of them was cut too high, thus allowing the fired shell to get caught behind the ejector, easy fix....remove the ejector plate and cut a piece of brown paper(or similar) to shape and insert under the ejector plate, then replace plate, this raises the bolt up a little in the receiver and allows the firearm to eject.
Secondly.....the barrel under the foresight on the Brno Model 5 and 1 is slightly over 1/2", which allows one to machine a 1/2" SAE thread if one so desires, whilst still allowing the continued use of the original foresight (which is repositioned behind the thread), something that cannot be satisfactorily done with a Model 2.
