Broke my lee challenger - 500 rds

I don't get as many emails as I used too... anyone can fire me a question I dont mind I'll try and help anyway I can.

Now 100% of your primers should end up in the tube...

I used to own a Lee Challenger press. It was my first press. The same exact thing happened to it. I have been using a Redding Boss for the past 15yrs and it still looks like new after 1000s of reloads. I like most of Lee products, just not their presses.

Andrew,
does'nt the primer arm get covered in crud when decapping? I know it swings out the way a short distance. I actually do all my priming on the press. I always remove the priming arm when decapping to keep the arm clean and contaminant free for priming. :D

Nope just keep it in there trust me :) it may fall out the ocassional time from geting loose from going up and down and in and out but just put it back there and keep going.

I have a Breech Lock Press as well and the only thing I remove is the Primer tray assembly.
Without that arm your primers go all over the place. Learned that lesson early.

I do all my depriming and priming on the Breech lock press and load in the pro 1000.
Over 7000 rounds so far and no issue with crud build up

If you need LEE press parts check out Higginson Powders Inc. in Hawkesbury Ontario.. they have a website. They stock pretty well most parts. or call them at 1-613-632-9300

Already called them. No stock.

I don't know when the replacement will arrive and I was hoping to load this weekend. I would have liked to buy another now, and I wouldn't mind having a spare around.

When I called Ellwood Epps they said this is "not unheard of".

I'm not bashing Lee stuff, just calling like I see it. My other stiff works fine and was priced reasonably. I'll let you know when the replacement shows up.

Simply wrap some electrical tape around and it a continue to load, gently. I bought a USED challenger press 20yrs ago. It had the same broken cam and that's what the guy who sold it to me had done. I have loaded thousands of rounds on it. While trying to de-prime and neck re-size some .30-06 on my new turret press, I literally broke the turret top of the press. When I called Lee, they asked me to send the part and they would replace it. I decided that since I was going to send them something anyway, I'd throw in the old cam. I explained that I had bought the press this way and could they sell me another. They sent me a steel one free. A new decapping pin (I don't know why) and a new die (not sure why that one didn't work, it had been used successfully before) and a new top piece. I live in Norther AB and I had the stuff back in under 4 weeks. I was very pleasantly surprised by the turnaround, not by the service.

I've had very poor experiences with Lee this year. My collet neck sizing die broke 55 cases in. Getting it fixed under warranty provided 3 problems:

- it cost me $10 to ship it back to Lee.
- it took 5 weeks for the repair to be returned.
- Lee only replaced the cap of the neck sizing die - this didn't fix the problem.

So, needless to say I'm cutting my losses and dumping Lee products. On the advice of some club members, I'm going with a Forster Bump Die instead. Doing some deeper research into Lee, it appears that they only have their head offices in the US, and their (inferior, IMHO) products are all made in China.

Where did you hear they were made in China?

Lee will normally credit you for the shipping costs to send it back if you include the invoice in your package...

To my knowledge all lee products are proudly made in the U.S.A in there Wisconsin plant... infact they like to make a point of that in there publications and on there website too.

Update

The replacement part arrived by mail yesterday - ten day turnaround. It didn't cost me a cent.

I'm not entirely satisfied since it broke under such light use, but I suppose i might just have got a bad one, and they fixed it as quick as could be expected.

Anyway, I'm loading again.
