Just got back from the range, where I was testing 45 ACP loads with a new powder (TiteGroup).

I shot 3 different bullets with 3 different powder charges in each, ranging from 4.0 to 4.6 gr.

My S&W 625. was shooting great. For the last test, I clicked the rear sight down 2 clicks and fired. Bullet hit the bull and everything felt normal, but rear sight had popped up and out of the frame notch. The fired case extracted real easy, and the case looks fine.

But the steel strip the sight is on has bent banana shaped and lost its spring. I don’t understand what happened. Load was lead 225 gr bullet over 4.6gr of TiteGroup.

Went back to the range and found the missing littel part. It is the silver coloured tab under the elevation screw in the picture. It has a stud on top that screws up into the bottom of the evation screw.

The little black screw cam loose and allowed the tab to unscrew and fall out. It is all backtogether now, with some LokTite on the little balck screw at the front.

for the 1911 problem what bullets are you using whats the OAL?
If the slide will not go into battery with round in it and the take the round out and it will then the round it most likely the problem...

Have you checked you extractor? (I assume this is a standard 1911 extractor)
when you retract the slide is the round being held to the breechface?

OK. Both problems solved. 1911 had a bullet stuck in barrel, just forward of chamber. Bullets would not go all the way in.

625 solved, i think. The elevation screw screws into a little foot that slides into a groove in the frame. Sight strap is supposed to be banana shaped. The screw and foot hold the sight down. When I adjusted he screw, I mst have turned it the wrong way and backed the sccrew right out of the foot. When I fired, i guess it fell off and I just saw the loose sight, not knowing a piece was missing.

I will go back to range and look for it.

Have you tried taking the barrel out of the 1911 and dropping the rounds into the chamber? I only ask because when I first started to reload for my 9mm the first dozen or so rounds didn't resize the full legnth and would not chamber all the way.

625 is a revolver, I have one. Looks like the front screw in the sight stripped and pulled out?? Is the top strap bent, doesn't look like it?

Agree/\ Can't understand how that front screw could have stripped its threads, but that's what the picture is showing. Or the front screw loosened because it was not properly or tightly screwed down in the first place. A tiny drop of Loctite Blue will do if the threads are not stripped.

Cant' understand the previous responses as well, re: references to 1911s?

I think he's talking about his .45 APC revolver not a 1911.

Could last the sight adjustment have been a little too far and the screw was on the verge of being stripped? The recoil may have finished it off as the screw looks off centre in the picture. Does the elevator screw rotate freely now?

I believe the sight leaf has a camber to act as the spring you work the elevation screw against. So with the elevation screw broken or stripped it's got that banana shape cuz it's no longer held down.

There's a bunch of tiny little parts that make up the rear sight, looks like you need some replacements? Do you have a manual for the 625, my 586/686 manual details the sight parts?

I don't think the revolver's fubared, the sight just let go. If in doubt, default to your local smith and have it looked at.

Sorry for the confusion. I edited out the problem with my 1911 when I discovered it was a bullet stuck in the barrel. Bullet has been removed.

The 625 problem is interesting, and those of you with similar sights can learn from my experience. The strap is supposed to be banana shaped. It s anchored at the front end with a tiny, but fairly long screw. This screw was loose and backed out far enough to remove the tension on strap. IT SHOULD BE BLUE LOKTITED!!!!!!

When I find the little rectangular washer that goes under the elevation screw, I will put it back together and LokTite the little screw.

I am about to check my other Smiths to see if they too have this same setup that needs LokTite.
