Has this ever happen to anyone? I loaded 5 in the mag. Took my first shot and the bottom of the mag broke!...The remaining shells dropped out...freaked me right out... Should I even bother contacting Colt? Thoughts and suggestions are welcome

Real Colt mag or cheap knock-off???

What makes you think it's a "real" Colt mfg. mag? There's a lot of cheap knock-offs out there that say "Colt .45 Auto" on the bottom that aren't authentic... ;)

Thats hrad one to call especially if you don't know if it as an actual colt mag it might be hassle compare to the ones you can find for like $35 so it might be easier for your time and perhaps shipping cost just to buy another one?

if it's a 1911( which you didn't tell us) they range from about 25 up to 50 bucks for the likes of a wilson/mcormick/ whatever- from the sounds of things , you have a floorplate type- just buy a new one and save the hassel-

y'know i'd be inclined to let somebody take a look at that broken mag- i was just looking at mine and there's 4 micro spot welds holding the floorplate on- if those weren't properly done, the floorplate would let go-might be a simple weld to put things right- anyway, get yourself some quality mags - the better ones have a removable floorplate so you can clean them without compressing the spring and removing the follower- and you WILL want to clean them from time to time- a lot of guys base their mag numbers on a 50 round box- 5-10's , 7-8s, 8-7s etc- most of the pouches have even numbers

I chucked it out:( ...I figured id buy a few new ones. Just a freak thing I guess as I only load a row (5) at a time and this gun is no work horse.

the first rule of having a gun is that you never chuck anything - a broken mag can yield a spring and follower when the other ones get tired- or someone that has more knowledge than you might be able to fix it- or something else can do the trick- i've got an original colt ar 20 mag that has a broken fold on the floorplate- it's together with contact cement- i'll never get it off without a knife, but it works- this stuff is just 2 valuable and i'm just 2 damned cheap

I don't like to collect broken stuff but you point is taken as someone else may be able to use it.

I had some time on my hands today and wrote Colt. Why not? Lets see what their Customer service is like. I didn't ask for anything, just explained what happened. I will be very interested to see what their response is if I get one at all...In the mean time I will buy some Wilsons.

Stay tuned...

I had the same thing happen to the mag on my Colt 1991 and it is a colt mag.

if it's anything like some of the others they may replace it. but they'll ask you to send back the pieces and pay shipping - possibly both ways- much cheaper just to replace it and avoid the border hassels- it's still a mag as far as customs is concerned

I've had a batch of new 5 USGI mags split at the back rib. Clearly faulty. The vendor did refund exchange my mags for goods ones + extras, so all is well.
