Broken Dillon 650 :(

Well after all of the talk of Dillon's superiority on here and everywhere else I decided a few months ago to invest in a used 650, its is good shape and the deal was right...

Here we are 3 months later and the frigging crank arm is broke in half from loading lubed 9mm, pretty hard to believe a part like that would fail... :(

Don't get me wrong I like this press, I may even like it more than my Hornady LNL but my Hornady has never had such a severe problem....

No problem with Dillon getting the parts, I called them today and they are sending me a pair of them, I told him that the threads on my pins were damaged when the lock nuts came off and asked about the newer press having grease fittings on the pins, he tells me thats a upgrade and i have to pay 48 bucks for it plus shipping and then tells me its impossible to have damaged threads on the pins...Guess my eyes are bad eh? :rolleyes:

I wish I could come up with a reason why it broke, it makes no sence... I had a primer get stuck in there one time and it limited the stroke until I figured out what was going on, maybe that stressed it out...I would not think a primer would be enough to do it but you never know, and it was some time ago...

I got rid of that stupid primer cup and have not had it happen again.. :) All my primers go down the tube and in the garbage now, not all over the bench and floor...
 
Well, you did say that you bought it used, the previous owner might have dropped it or something. Maybe that arm was cracked when you got it?
 
I tend to agree that it was overstressed somehow.... I can't see how it could be stressed that much even with a gorilla on the handle... The sugestion of the previous owner dropping it or something similar sounds plausible...

I have loaded in excess of 40 000 rounds on my 550 and other than replacing a couple bent primer seating pins and the plastic cups on the end or the primer tubes I have had no issues...

I wouldn't necessarily blame the seller in this case. It's a Dillon. What would motivate a seller to knowingly risk selling a damaged press without disclosure when replacement parts are just a phone call away? :)
