I'll try and answer the questions in order. As far as tips go, make sure your bait is in a steel barrel and chained to a tree or else the bears will steal your barrel full of food. Lol. We use old donuts and bread for bait, and usually cover it with old fryer grease as well. What I accidentally lit on fire (wasn't supposed to do that, just smoke), was called a honey burn. Basically you put some honey, kool aid, and vanilla extract into a metal pot and heat it until it starts smoking heavily. I let it get too hot and she got a little carried away. It helps to send scent downwind to any bears in the area!
As far as the carcass goes, I kept as much fat as I could as I am going to render it down for cooking/medicinal uses. I also kept the claws and the skull. We left the carcass and fur there at the bait site. We haven't found that it has any negative impact on the site, especially because the ravens / scavengers will get at it within a few hours. We also wanted to see if we could capture any wolves on camera, as we know they are in the area and have eaten the bear carcasses before.
And about the crocs... that definitely wasn't planned. I realized I forgot my rubber boots at home halfway out... big tactical error! But, luckily, the "croc" is the world's most versatile, comfortable, and stylish shoe known to man! They were up to the task!
Cheers!
