Broken M305

Hello all, I recently purchased a used Norinco M305 308cal and went to the range. Shot about 10rnds and then the roller broke on the bolt. Is there a way I can get this fixed or do I now own a parts rifle? I called a local gun shop and he told me to go on here and see what I can find.
Sure hope I can get some help I really enjoyed shooting this rifle even though it was short lived.
 
Is it the roller thats broken or the bolt itself? You might find a new roller on treelineM14 or you could also get yourself a USGI bolt and hope it headspaces correctly when checked by a gunsmith. You're ahead of the game by dropping a USGI bolt in as a lot of people do this out of the box. You could also buy a Nork bolt for cheaper on the EE when one comes up but you'll only be back where you started.
 
Sorry, no the bolt is no longer usable as where the roller once was attached broke off entirely. Had to use a screwdriver to pull the bolt back to remove the spent shell.

He is a good guy, and he knows his stuff. If there is someone who may have a few bolts laying around that he could sell you one and lap it in to fit. While he has your rifle get him to tighten it up unless you were planning on doing a bunch of reading a tweaking it up yourself to wring the most accuracy out of it. They are a great rifle, but there are a few minor issues to look for and potentially fix to make them great!!
 
first find out why it broke. was there interference with the receiver, look for marks. roller only touches the op rod interior. not a usual problem with norcs. could be a soft bolt. if you had to use a screw driver to pry it out, could have interference elsewhere, and the roller arm took the hit. I would have someone really familiar with the m14 platform look at it before any shooting with a new bolt.

Glad you are uninjured. Sorry about the damage. Sounds like your left bolt lug was not contacting the reciever as it should when in battery. Could you post pictures?
 
I got in touch with notsorichguy he said he should be able to fix it. I'll send the rifle to him and he can work his magic. The action seemed smooth to me although when I first shot it seemed like a misfire I ejected the shell not a mark on the primer? reloaded it then it did it again so repeated the process and it fired fine for about 10 shots then the above happened. Guy I bought it from gave me a box of federal 180 grain which I thought was a little heavy since I use 150 grain in my 7mm for hunting moose. I didn't see any other damage or wear marks. I think I have to have more posts before I can attach any photos.
 
That federal 180 gr ammo might have caused problems . I've read quite a bit on reloading the m1a and they all caution what ammo to help it operate properly . let us know when you know
 
If the roller stem broke off chances are the roller was striking the receiver when going into battery.
A simple bolt swap with fix the issue short term, but the receiver needs to have some material removed below the roller to avoid it happening again. Simple fix but best to get it done by some one who knows what they are doing, then they can check headspace, barrel index etc while at it.
 
Stock m305, stick to 168 and lighter.
The gas system can be modified with a grooved piston or drilled out plug to increase dwell time to not be so hard on the Op-rod with heavier bullets.
So, really in the end, it's up to you what bullet you can run provided you do the appropriate modifications.

Or alternatively buy a new m305 and keep your other one as a parts gun.
 
Update..... Sent my rifle to M14medic (notsorichguy) he did his magic with my rifle. I got myself some 7.62x51 surplus ammo from Wanstalls and went to the range today the rifle performed flawless. Put about 60 rnds through her and had an absolute blast. I definitely recommend M14medic.ca for service and repair on these rifles. Upstanding customer service and a real pleasure to talk to.
All I want to do now is mount some optics and rifle will be perfect for me.
 
glad to hear you're squared away. nice to have Medic as backup. see Barney in Calgary sept 10 , best money you can spend on the m14 platform, and a good time.
