BROKEN REM 700 Bolt!

Any suggestions guys?


Got the box in the mail. looked like it was packed very tight which is usually a good thing. pulled the loose parts out, the bolt was wrapped in packing paper, it fell out of the paper no more than 12" above, onto my wooden work bench. next sound was metal on metal. opened the paper and found the bolt handle broken free of the bolt. clean break... My local gunsmith told me to call the Remington customer service. The told me the gun is outside of the warranty period.... not cool!
 
Wow Remington quality really has gone to s#*t.
Is that rust on the bare surface of the metal?
Did you ask the store where you bought it from for an exchange or refund?
 
Gravel Agency was who I called.... they suggested I look for someone more local as they focus on warranty work... The person on the phone WAS helpful in listing off local gun smiths.

zero rust... the thing is in excellent condition only 200 rnds fired

These things happen but are not hard to fix, Guntech would be a good choice if it's out of warranty. I once had a BAT bolt handle come off in my hand, brand new action, customer. I assume it went back to BAT.
 
I have seen couple of those occurences myself and that's why I have no Rem mod 700 rifles in my collection.
Tiny extractors and constant problems with factory trigers add to my overall opinion about them....
Prefer Rugers mod 77 by far, own half a doz of them and nothing ever, going wrong with those.
IMHO tig welding handle to the bolt would be the only option for piece of mind reliability.
 
I always tig weld the handles on any of the guns I build, that way you can set the timing and extraction cam for the correct contact.
 
This reinforces why I will avoid Remington (nowadays). A fall should not have done that. Thats crazy. Sorry for the hassle that your having.

I had the same thing happen to me 30ish years ago. The rifle left the factory in '71.... So it wasn't "new" then either.....

I had a local welder braze the handle back on. 20 yrs later the bolt piled up due to use and the heat treatment being removed when it was brazed in the mid '80s, Approx 200-250 rnds fired in the intervening 20 yrs.....

Replacement bolt is the only "long term" solution.... IMO.

That's what I did 3-4 yrs ago with my rifle when the bolt finally bit the dust.
 
Ignore the bad Remington posts... they are a bit like seagulls.

What you have experienced is not that common when you think 7 or 8 million have been produced... but it does happen and it is very annoying to the owner.

It can be repaired and will probably last forever. If you decide to replace the bolt, make sure the replacement has the original style 700 extractor. They are very strong and a major component in what makes a 700 the strongest, safest 2 lug action made.
 
One of the fun things about silver braze, it can be surprisingly strong and last forever, but you generally don't know its a bad joint until it breaks off.

Easy enough to repair.
 
Phuck. I have never encountered this with my Rem 700's. Remington should just go good for it regardless of the warranty period. I'd lose my marbles if this happened to me. I have three 700's with two of the three being one month old and one year old and do find the workmanship, fit and finish to be well under what I'd expect for what I've paid for the two SPS Tacticals. Yes they work well but they just seem to have that not quite up to the money I paid for them feel of quality workmanship.

I hope you get this resolved with Remington quickly and for free.
 
Thanks for the info guys... I am in contact with Gravel again. They DO seem very helpful... I disagree with all the negative feedback towards Remington. But that is just my opinion. i have 3x Rem 700s, the 2 older ones have about 1000 rounds between them, this LTR is new to me with about 200 rnds, down the pipe (still looks new)... I'll post an update when something starts happening with the repair or replacement.

These things happen??? Really lol. That would be most people's reason to never buy remington again. If something like a freaking bolt broke I would break the rifle in half and ship it back to remington and ask them if they can take the trash out for me.
