Broken scope ring

Just curious here... Any of you ever had a piece of a scope ring break while shooting ?

I put a scope on a rifle for a friend today...weaver grand slam steel rings. Took the rifle to the range and on about the fifth shot, something hit my tooth... I couldn't figure out what it was until I spotted the black piece of steel under the shooting bench. It was the clamp that holds the ring onto the base... Split right across where the screw goes through it.

Buddy has a Brno that he had chambered to 6.5X68 Schuler.
Leupold Scope Rings, Lynx Scope Rings Broke on recoil too.... he eventually broke down and bought a set of rings for huge coin and the name escapes me now, but they where manufactured in Australia and have since survived 40 rounds and taken six moose in 10 seasons of hunting.
Not uncommon and not totally unheard of either.
Got pics, be interesting to see... I have nothing to show in regards to pics because it was fun to watch him squirm and explain his troubles all the while trying to brag about the virtues of a 6.5 Schuler.

I snapped one of the clamps tightening it.....I thought it was odd there were spares included in the box but now I know why lol
The rings are investment cast, so not the strongest. Personally I love TPS rings but thought I would try these out.
 
I sold a Steyr Manlicher to my son's friend the other day and mounted up his scope for him with a set of brand new Grand slams I had laying around. Got it sighted in for him, and all seemed well until a week later he brought it back with a target of sprayed bullets. The clamp on the back ring was broken in half. Sounds like what happened to you. I dug through my pile of give-away junk and found a set of old style Weaver rings and used those instead. I felt a little bad that the kid had to waste ammo to find the flaw but it wasn't my fault. Heck I'd even given him the rings in the first place, along with the replacements.
I had a set of cheap aluminum rings snap across the top shell, but I've long since forgotten what brand they were. Something in the junk class for sure. Had a Talley one piece ring-base that sheared half of the screws on one ring. I guess the Kimber .338 Win Mag was a bit too much for it. The Leupold Double dovetails seem to be holding well.
 
I forgot to take a pic of it... I'll have to. It was the rear clamp on this gun as well. Model 70 featherweight, 308... No amount of recoil. I figured something like that could happen if it was over tightened or something like that, but never thought I'd ever see it with everything torqued right to specification. Friggin aggravation... I had it shooting the prettiest little 1" group right in the center of the target. Oh well, I'll put the new ones on when he gets them and try again lol.

I have 3 guns with the grand slam rings on them, and they have been just fine. I put leupold prw rings on my model 70.... I didn't really care for how they went on... Have to snap the top half over the tube...scratches the scope.

That's because you're not doing it right. Put a Allen or Torx wrench in a screw hole on each side, coming from the top. That will give you two levers that you can pinch with your thumb and forefinger. That will flex the ring slightly and then you can slip them over without snapping it over the scope. I hope that makes sense? I wouldn't want to snap a 50 dollar ring over a 1000 dollar scope either, but there is no need for it.

I had that happen when installing a pair of Grand Slam rings. It is an issue I have seen before (albeit fairly rarely), though it is usually a sign of over tightening the rings to the bases on the rifle.
 
Its bad design for the material. If it were machined, forged or even stamped out of sheet metal the clamp would bend before it broke. If it was thicker they could get away with cast or powder metal construction.
