I see Browning is offering two versions of it's BPS shotgun in 16 bore. Here is the age old question. Is this another 16 bore shotgun built on the 12 bore frame or has it been trimmed to suit the 16? I see both the 12 and the 16 weight the same with comparable barrel lengths. My new Remington 16 870 actually weighs more than my 12 gauge 870. Any Browning gurus have the answer?

cheers Darryl

You bet. The outside diameter is the same as a 12 with the inside of course be 16 bore. Still a nice gun but it had none of the 16 bore attributes. My older 16 870 (1959) is actually light and handy. It has a slimmer barrel profile.

Good news

I just got off the phone to Browning in the good old USA. A very helpful young lady in customer service advised me that the BPS 16 bore is " built on Brownings proven steel BPS 20 gauge frame" Delivery to dealers is to be by June or July 2007. I have already ordered mine from EPPS. Now the wait begins...

I am known locally as a 16 gauge nut in that I will buy or try to buy any decent 16 that I find for sale. I am however not all that interested in aquireing a PBS 16. The main reason will be the weight -- the Browning site reports that the new 16 will weight in at 7 lb 10 oz -- thats only 1 oz less than their 12. Even if this is a type o and weighs about the same as their 20 ga --that would be at 7 lbs + . Farrrrrrrrr too heavy for a 16 ga. A sixteen should weigh in at max 6.5 lbs --- prefferably less. MHO
Cheers!:)

The 16 bore BPS Upland special will likely weigh in about 6.5 lbs. I prefer the pistol grip hunter version. I don't find 7 lbs that heavy. The English rule of the gun weighing 96 times the weight of the shot charge (ie:1 OZ) would say that it is too heavy also. I think it would be about right with 1 1/8 OZ Kent matrix loads I use in my 16's for waterfowl and late season pheasants. I am happy that a major firearms builder has come about to a reduced frame size for the 16. Hooray for Browning.....

Brownings web site is wrong the 16 bore BPS will weigh in same as the 20 bore. It will still be near 7 pounds. Like I said I don't feel that 7 lbs is that heavy in a pump field gun. I have a 28 bore 870 when I feel I need a lighter gun to carry.
