Browning 1911-22 - Magazine Release Problem

Hi folks,

I just ordered a Browning 1911-22, brand new. I have a problem with the magazine release. I've got a small problem I'm hoping the fine folks here can help me with:

A magazine releases okay, but one can't insert a new one without pressing down and holding on the magazine release as one inserts a new magazine.

Without doing this, the magazine release slides too far into the frame and blocks the entry of any new magazine. When the frame is empty, the release looks like it is passed through the grip farther than it should. When the grip is viewed from a side profile, think of it looking like a nail that's been nailed flush to a board, then hit in farther so it's sunk in.

Without pushing on the magazine release and holding it, in this state, one can no longer insert a magazine; the magazine won't insert deeper than the point of the magazine release.

The only way to do so is to press the magazine release back from the other side, holding it manually, until the magazine can pass the point of the magazine release.

Then the magazine re-inserts ok, and the magazine release stays in the firearm until I press the magazine release again, at which point the magazine falls clear of the firearm, and I can no longer insert a new one unless I manually depress and hold the magazine release from the opposite side.

I can push the release back and forth; it returns to a pressed state due to a spring. The release does not stick in anyway; there is tension on the release the entire time.

I've e-mailed the dealer I got it from, but I got no response in almost two weeks now, so I don't know what to do. Can someone help?

I've got the same gun, but waiting for my ATT to arrive so I can't pick it up yet, hope I don't have the same problem.
 
I known mine is a bit tight, but with a little smack on the bottom of the mag it will go in. My mag has a mark on it from the release rubbing as it goes in. Haven't got around to it but plan on removing the release from the gun and beveling the bottom a bit, smooth it out so the mag goes in easier.

It's easy to remove, I already had mine out and modded it to get rid of the mag safety. As far as the off button side of the release, yes it will be inset some when the mag is out of the gun.
 
MrSharp, thanks for the comments; I'll have a closer look at it to see if that gets at the problem. Failing that, I suppose I could always try Browning itself to see what they say.

How did you get rid of the mag safety? I'd love to do that to mine.
 
There is two ways, if you take the slide off and look inside the magwell at the back of the trigger you will see there is a small tab on the back of the trigger that hits a matching tab on the mag release when the magazine is out of the gun preventing the trigger from being pulled. When the magazine is in the release button is moved over slightly allowing the tab on the trigger to clear into a grove on the release. To disable you can either take the trigger out and file or grind the tab off there, or remove the mag release and file or grind the tab off of it, I chose to do the release as its much easier to remove. All you have to do is push in and turn the screw on the non button side a quarter to half turn and then let it come back out, the release will now come out of the gun and you can work on the tab, it is in two pieces that lock together with the spring and screw. Reverse to put back in, should only take a few mins to complete with a dremel bit longer if you file.
 
i had the same problem with mine but it seemed to go away after using it for awhile

i can't really explain it since i never noticed the problem stop but i can say i had to slam the mag in when it was brand new

Thanks for that, I just did both of mine.
 
OP, work the magazine in and out of the gun for awhile and see if it loosens up.

I know that if your grip screws are too tight, it will prevent the magazine from going in and dropping freely.
 
Update - Thanks for the various suggestions folks. It works now -- some combination of the various suggested actions did it (a quarter turn of the grip screws, a dab of oil on the release, and two strokes of a fine grain file on the lower edge of the release). I'd also spoken with the Browning Canada service representative earlier today about this, and he had suggested that a few strokes with a file would loosen it up. "Sometimes it's just not filed down quite enough at the factory" he suggested, and he mentioned that he's heard of this concern a few times.
