In 1983 I was on a Canadian Army machine gunners course 6 weeks
3 weeks on GPMG ,7.62 nato (Platoon wpns det ) and 3 weeks on M2 ,50 cal
Yes very heavy to carry specially the 50 cal.
no vehicles as we were Airborne
You can manpack the 50 cal in components but its NOT fun ,
as I recall a 50 cal machine gun detactment was 9 guys 4 per gun( 2 x 50 cal )
and one sgt in charge,if memory serves me correctly
Best 6 weeks of my gun nut life ,Lots of belt fed fun,but unlike the movies we fired in bursts so as not to overheat the barrel
wife at the time even helped me study for written tests
