I'm thinking of buying a Browning Semi-auto, oops sorry, I mean self-loader,
gotta be Politically correct, NOT.

Anyways, in either .300 or .338 winmag, with the boss system muzzle thing on it.

If any one has one of these & wouldn't mind me shooting a few rounds from it before I make my final decesion, Please let me know ?

I can buy a box of ammo & you keep the rest. I just want to shoot 2 or 3 rounds to get a feel for them.

Oh, a .375 is also an option, but I'm leaning towards the above mentioned.

If you're wondering what my intended use is, it's for moose hunting.

.338 Win Mag in Browning BAR

I had one of these beauties in .338 for awhile and not only was it very comfortable to shoot, it was deadly accurate. With either factory ammunition or handloads it was quite easy to find a load to land 3 shots into an inch consistently at 100 yards. I don't know why in the hell I let that one go...:( Oh yeah, now I remember...I'm a freakin' retard!

Jeff :)

the BOSS is a gadget, gizmo, or gimmick- most folks i've spoken with find the gun shoots better without- i've got a 91 bar in 338( before the re-design) and it likes the 250 grainers a lot- be prepared that it eats powder like it's going out of style though- 70 grains or better at a pop- you only get 100 rounds to a pound- just wish they'd bring back the 275's - better b/c and more weight- and not a target bullet like the 300

I have had two of the BARs in .338 without the BOSS system. Both were pleasant to shoot. I have no opinion on the BOSS system, never having tried it, but it does seem to increase most dramatically the blast/noise.

Back to colt45gunner, if you have not had an opportunity to try one by 8 April, please send me a pm. I sold one to a lad who will be at the 9 Apr Belleville gun show, and I am 100% positive he would allow you to shoot it to test it out. He lives out near Madoc Ont, which would be a couple hours drive for you I believe. Anyways I would surely ask him, and get his phone number for you.

I assume you mean the Speer 275 grainers. I used to use those too. Notice however that Swift does make the 275gr in the A-Frame.

I shot a 300 BAR for twenty years. I tweaked it and fired heavy handloads through it the whole time. It would shoot one hole groups consistantly. I put 12 pounds of powder through it one year. The recoil is very manageable off of them. You won't be dissapointed if you purchase one of them. They are real easy to strip and clean too. Just make sure that you keep oil away from the action and gas piston or you might run into problems when it is really cold out.I hope that this helps you. Take care and enjoy

Belleville Fish and Game Club, east on Highway 2, North about 1 mile on Elmwood Drive, door opens for the public at 10 am I believe.

I probably will not be able to make that show, but ask you buddy if he's o.k.
with me trying it out & we can meet at the trenton gun club to shoot it.
we can call Badboybeeson out while we're there to shoot some AR's & .45's while we're at it :)

Oh, when you say the Bar .338 is manageable, what does that mean ?
I'm 5'-6" & 173 lbs. I know 1 or 2 shots on hunt day is no biggy, but
will it be hard on me if I shoot 20-40 rounds on one days of practise ?

- i'm 5'8" and 250( yea, what of it) and i shot 250's with no problem in 10 round strings- incidentally, there IS A RECOIL PAD on the back of the browning- if it still bothers you, you can add a PAST sheild ,and you can add a muzzle brake - now you're down to the recoil of a heavy 308- but it's not necessary as the heaviest you can run in the browning is 275 as it has a 1/12 twist- practially, though you're limited to 250's as the upper limit unless you get speciality

I borrowed one once to shoot a moose, never having shot the rifle beforehand. Of course the concentration when shooting the moose was a distraction, but for all intents and purposes I felt no recoil, and the .338 magnum was extremely deadly with very little meat damage.

I have a browning auto-loader in 338 WM. I also have a sako 75. The browning is a bit heavier and there is a bit less felt recoil compared to the sako. It's a great gun and has killed many moose.
You'll never feel the recoil when there's a moose in the scope.
I don't think I'd want to shoot 40 rounds off a bench with it though. I think you'd get sore after that.

I have seen guys in your size range, and smaller comfortably use the 300WM and 338WM BARs, with no problems. As for 20-40 rounds a day, well if you just jump into it, your gonna feel it, but by the 3rd or 4th time to the range you won't even notice it.
The 300 and 338s tend to have a snappier recoil than some other semis, but other than that....

The 2 BAR's I've shot were very nice shooters with soft recoil and good but not tactical accuracy. They struck me as heavy though. The BOSS does indeed work as advertized, although they are kinda fugly, and are viciosly loud if you go with the comp version, not CR. If you are not all that recoil sensitive go with the CR and save your ears!
