I recently bought an mid 80's browning a5 magnum and it is having issues feeding on the magnum setting. It will feed most shells down to 1 1/4 oz loads on the light setting but on the magnun one the only shell i have been able to get it to eject is 1 1/4 oz 3" federal slugs. It will not eject any of the 3" steel shot shells i have fed it when on this setting. I have had someone watch the ejection port while i shoot and it almost ejects them but not quiet. The gun is in brand new condition aand i am wondering if it has even been broke in. I am not sure if these guns did require a break in period tho.

Can anyone help me? The gun is clean as i can make it but it will not eject shells on the mag setting. Will this just go away with more shooting or will it never eject mag loads on this setting?

To cycle 3" steel loads you need to set your recoil friction rings to the 2 3/4" heavy setting. This should be on a schematic drawing glued inside your fore arm. 3" steel produces no where near the recoil of 1 7/8 OZ lead 3" magnums. I know, I own and shoot one. These guns will break in after about 3 thousand rounds. Just kidding they don't need to be broken in. They are perfect as they come from the factory. General rule use the heaviest setting the gun will reliably cycle with a particular load. These guns are not as accepting of mixed ammo as gas operated guns BUT when set right they are more relaible with less dirt fouling issues. NOTE: it is not goood for the gun to shoot heavy 3" lead loads when on the 2 3/4" setting. So don't mix any in there. Hope this helps.

Is there a light coat of oil on the magazine tube, where the friction rings ride? That may be enough to let the action cycle more freely and eject with the Magnum ring setting.

I shoot Winchester HV 3" steel loads and Kent fassteel 3" loads. All work great. Sometimes it will eject 2 3/4" Winchester HV steel but only when I oil the mag tube. I stick to the 3" loads in steel. I have not tried any lighter loads as it is a designated waterfowl gun. Look for a nice Light 12 model A5 to compliment the magnum. The light 12's will shoot a broad range of 2 3/4" loads. Would make a nice pair.

that is what i have planned to do. The browning fits me pertectly. I would think thaat a light 12 or light 20 would fit me as good as well. I have been looking around but they aren't thateasy to come by. I had pickedup a light franchi for upland but it doesn't fit me so i think the next move will be to sell the franchi and find another browning

Your Browning Magnum stock is slightly shorter than the Light 12. This was to alow for heavy clothing worn by waterfowlers. Check out shotgun world on the net. Go to the Browning Lovers forum. It has loads of answers for you.
