What methods have you guys used to brown your muzzleloader barrels? I'm not looking to buy a premade solution to put on the barrel. Interested to know the various ways you guys have done it, specifically cheap and easy.

cheers

This is the solution I use, dirt cheap, super simple and everything is available at the Safeway:

Works as well as Plum Brown, I've done many parts with this now. Note that I heat the parts and I no longer use the steam box, first I tried it cold but it wasn't nearly as effective. Heated she works great.

(I should update that thread I guess)

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thank-you!

No problem - like I say disregard all my steam box comments (I'll clean that up later with some better pictures); just:

1) clean the part with acetone,
2) heat with a propane torch (not red heat by any stretch of the imagination)
3) wipe on the solution and keep wiping until it cools down
4) wait until it dries then card (I just use old denim)
5) clean and repeat until it is where you want it

Good luck!

I was told the product "plum brown" could no longer be imported into Canada. Any one else experience this ?

Correct; I didn't look beyond Track of the Wolf but there seemed to be shipping restrictions that went beyond the corporate level ("Special Restrictions Apply
Not available for export outside the U.S.A. Only ground shipping to a physical street address in the continental 48 states. Can not be shipped to a P.O. Box.

I think that is why I went looking for my own recipe in the first place. Honestly though, having used plum brown, I think the home brew recipe is just as effective. Although granted it is more corrosive than Plum Brown.
