Browning A-Bolt .280 - opinions please

But it's more about the fit, if the nicest rifle you see don't fit you won't shoot well!!

I agree totally. I am trying to get the vendor out to the range over the weekend so I can take it for a whirl.

Browning a-bolt 280

Glyn This is a sweet machine,I own one in ss/syn.I can carry it around all day and it never gets heavy. It has taken elk at 386 yds w/160gr and many deer w/140 grn.It is topped w/Elite 4200 2.5-10.If you look after it(don't drop/lend it out),you won't need to sight it inevery year. You will love it,I DO.:)

as has been said, the fit is the key. If the rifle fit & comes up well then u will be happy. The bottom line most guns are very similar, just the nature of the beast. If u like then good four u. PS cal.280 is my fav.

Congrats. I found the thread too late to reply. I bought my A-Bolt in .280 in '92 and it's been my go-to rifle since. Shot lots of deer and a few bears. I like the A-Bolt well enough, and the .280 is an excellent all-rounder for big game. Mine will shoot pretty much any ammo, factory or handloads, under an inch. Good luck with the rifle.

I like the 280 rem chambering, but after owning an a-bolt stainless stalker in 7mmremmag ,I will never own another. The fit and finish were quite good, but I had no use for the magazine system or the trigger.

I agree wholeheartedly!
I owned not one, but two A-Bolts, a 338 Mag and a 284 Winchester. Both shot well enough, but the Magazine system leaves me absolutely cold...what an abortion! The triggers are also lousy, can't be adjusted properly, and the trigger shoe is of some pot metal that breaks easily. Stock design is not my favorite either. However, the 280 is a fine chambering, which I can fully endorse. Regards, Eagleye.

Too funny amphibious.

two questions posed here:

1) A-bolt - i personally have had experience with 2 a-bolts. 7mmmag and 300RUM. Love them both, both shoot under 3/4 inch at 100yards with reloads. never had a problem with either. like the hinge/clip design. they are the lighter rifles in their class, have a 60deg bolt throw which i love (you won't bang your hand between the bolt and the scope), smooth action and triple locking lugs. The stainless stalker fits me like my skin. Have 3 other friends with them in 30-06, 300WSM and 7mmmag and i have seen all of these guns shoot too and they are all also under 1 inch with factory ammo. they all love the gun too. I will never buy anything but an A-bolt if i buy a bolt. LOL. best thing to do is go to a shop and put all your options side by side and i am sure one will stand out.

.280 caliber - can't help you there. heard great things about it. go to chuckhawks and read away. BTW just saw that a guy shot the 3rd all time biggest black bear with this caliber this season. weighed over 730lbs or something like that.

Did you not know the uniqueness of the magazine in the A-bolt or did you buy two just to confirm they are not really your cup of tea? Most people back away after buying one!

I love and enjoy all mines without any issue. :D

Perhaps he bought two before really using either.By the time he discovered what an abortion they are,he already had two of them.:p

I bought one and inherited the second one about 3 weeks later. It didn't take me long to dispose of both of them after I used the 338 to shoot a couple of Bison. I sold it off to some guy who wanted it so bad. Good for me!! The 284 went about one week later. I might take one if it was given to me, (then I could sell it right away) but to buy one again...not! The .280 Remington is a super caliber, the A-Bolt is not a rifle I would want to have again.
I have owned several and the mag system is the worst design,it's not a fully detachable nor is it a hinged floorplate. It can't be top loaded if needed and the small tang that holds the box mag to the floorplate is easily broken. I would still own at least one Browning if they dumped the mag design,it sucks hard.

Ruger Hawkeye is the way to go. All other American rifles are trash.

Correction: Savage and Weatherby are great too!

I own an abolt composite stalker in a 280 Rem and wouldn't trade it for the world. It is an outstanding cartridge, and deserves more respect than what it gets. I have taken a few deer with man and at the range it has outstanding performance. I can hit the 500 yrd gong with it everytime and the gong is about 2' by 3' in size, can't go wrong with that combo at all.
