Browning A-Bolt question from a "green horn"

I'm trying to better place the scopes on my 2 A-Bolts... I have a short and long action, 7mm-08 and 338wm respectively and the present scopes are not placed correctly for eye relief and cheek weld... I'm hoping to order Warne 2 piece steel extension bases for A-Bolts for better placement, but need to know if:

a) the 2 holes tapped into the receiver for the front base are the same distance apart as the 2 holes drilled for the rear base? (are front and rear bases interchangeable for the same rifle?).
b) do short action and long action use the same 2 piece bases? (are 2 piece bases interchangeable for long and short action?).

I'm thinking I may need to mix and match the Warne bases to get the correct placement... (Warne sells standard 2 piece bases and then a medium and long extension base)... I have a couple odd scopes with little tube to work with for placement, hence the use of extensions....

I don't want to remove what I have to check distances as both rifles are rifled in... I want only to rip all off and apart after I have the necessary hardware to reposition my scopes...

Any help is appreciated thanks..

Browning A-bolts feed from a magazine so skip the 2 piece base dilemma and order an EFW 1 piece rail for each gun. Way more options on where you can sit your gun down on the rifle and make the rifle fit you without getting bonzo in the face from a scope you are crawling up on to see through.

thanks for the reply... I'm not set on 2 piece bases as 1 piece would too be suitable if I have more options for scope positioning....

who is EFW and can you supply a link, please?... An internet search produced nothing????

You should be able to scope them without too much fooling around. My 25-06 has weaver bases and mounts a Burris Fullfield 3-9x with no problems. I believe that my brother's 30-06 wears Leupold rings and bases and has a 3.5-10x Leupold on it. There is no need and likely no advantage to using a one piece base.

Plain old Weavers will work perfectly on an A-Bolt with out any mounting issues. Buy the lowest height rings of good quality you can find as the bolt lift is only 60deg and will not contact the scope.

I used a Leupold 2x7 on my 22/250 A-Bolt for yrs with Weavers and a 4x leupold on a 375H&H. Everything was perfect about that fit.

that's a dirty word around here, Cub!!!! That W word! Especially when talking rings! The L word makes me smile, though! We use mostly Leupold scopes and mounts and bases, rings etc along with Burris and Redfield intertwined super equipment.;) Ya, the odd time with W bases.

My A bolt had 2 piece bases on it, worked fine. I run a 1 piece base now and like it more. You can still top load it. ( I just push it into the mag from the top and run the bolt )

I have an A-bolt composite stalker in .300 Win Mag. With Weaver bases installed on the receiver, I mounted a B&L Elite 4000 3.5-10x40mm with medium height finish Burris Z rings. Gives me perfect alignment & eye relief for what I need to do with it.

....................................................... Talley Lite 1 piece...interchangeable front to back or spin them around ....308 shown with..3x9x40 Leupold scope.

You can swap the bases back to front on the Ablot.
What set up are you using now?

Presently I have std Leupold 2 piece bases with std 30mm Leupold extension rings (front is dovetail arrangement)... The front extension ring still won't let the vintage German Schmidt & Bender 1.5-6x42mm come back far enough... The scope has little tube to work with as the front bell is quite large/long... This scope has typically a shorter eye relief than most/ all Leupolds so I find myself sliding uncomfortably forward for correct eye relief...the second rifle, has the exact same challenge with similar ffp Docter 1.5-6x42mm scope.... I know my the scopes are causing me this challenge but I wanted a good pair of ffp scopes, so now I must get things to work.... a challenge, but not impossible.... I have already in my stock, 30mm Leupold QRW rings I was planning to use if required...

thanks.. any and all suggestions are welcome...

I know that Weavers have fallen a bit by the wayside, but the system overall is the most copied one out there esp if you consider all the picatoonys available and for good reason. I use these and the Talley LWs only.

The old style rings with the top strap screws on one side are kinda funky to mount, but they do offer the same sort of ring with screws on both sides. I just bought six sets and they seem to work fine.. The Burris zee ring with inserts is a fine ring for these bases.
