I am considering purchasing a lightweight A5 full choke 2 3/4 inch chamber
I want to use steel shot and realize that with the full choke it would only damage the barrel
If I have it opened up to a mod choke by a gunsmith could I use steel or would you still not recommend it

An A5 is not the place to start when you want to shoot steel shot. (Japanese built Invector choked guns excepted) Steel compatible browning barrels are around but pricey and hard to find. I would hold out for a japanese made A5 Light twelve or Magnum 12 if I really had to have an A5 to shoot steel.

The newer style wads are fine in the older barrels. Open the choke to IC, you'll be fine.
 
Actually any steel through a A5 irregardless of choke is not fine I have seen a few with a bulge at the muzzle I won't even open a A5 bbl anymore for steel . A Hastings BBl $500 the best bbl you can buy there is all so the issue of higher pressure which translates to damage to the receiver. Buy a gun designed to shoot steel.

Interesting, was not that aware of plus pressures associated with 2 3/4" steel shot shells...but increased velocities would certainly translate into more chamber pressure. Good advice struff.
