Browning Abolt - A Revival

IMG_1559.jpg

My A-Bolt Hunter in .280 Remington has been my go-to rifle since I bought it new in 1993. It was always accurate and dependable.
I found the original stock to be less-than-perfect for me, so I restocked with a Boyd's Platinum in Claro and installed a Timney trigger spring about 2010.

I do recall that when I first started with hunting/shooting sites, including this one, about 20 years ago, the Browning A-Bolt was the "whipping boy" of rifles. Not any more, really.
Mind you, that was the way the Rem 700 was regarded in the early seventies, so.......

I agree with Buckmastr, the tang safety is the easiest and quietest safety that I have used. Kilo Charlie; I have the shorter brother of your rifle, a 284win. I like the Boydes stock btw. A lot of members on this site don't like the detachable mag on these rifle's, I happen to like it... a lot. :)

I had a few, my favourite was one in 270wsm the most accurate was a blued 300 win mag, when ever I went to the range with that one, I would start at 200 yards, I took two moose with it, one at 150 yards the other at about 40 yards. I never cared for the stocks always wanted a Boyd's Prairie Hunter or Heritage. Love the tang safety.

I use the same rifle, they are quite accurate once you get the right ammo dialed in. The only complaint I have with mine is the weight, 10lbs scoped.

Yes, and oddly enough my 375 H&H weighed the same with a 3-9X40 Bushnell Elite on it. Friend of mine here bought it for bison hunting, and is pleased that it is that heavy.

Are you sure your not mistaking a browning bbr for the A-bolt, the bbr is a heavier 9 locking lug receiver like the weatherby mark v. I don't see the A-bolt being that heavy.

I should've kept my A-Bolt Stainless Stalker w/BOSS in .375 H&H. :bangHead:
The bugger weighed only 7 lbs bare with either the BOSS brake or non vented, muzzle weight fitted. The 24" advertised barrel length on these included the BOSS or muzzle weight attached. Actual barrel length was 20", but fine fer me as I ran 'er with mainly subsonic and a tad quicker 270 gr handloads that shot into MOA @ 100 easy enough.

My nephew has the same rifle; we took it out and fired off a box of ammo un-scoped and with the brake on.
I found that rifle surprisingly pleasant to shoot.

My brother in law is rebarrelling an old A bolt 300 Win mag he got from a buddy of ours, putting a 26 in. stainless tube chambered in 264 win mag. We were never A bolt fans, bunch of the guys have BBRs so we'll see how this works out for him.

I like the 60 degree lift of the 3 lug bolt, I like the tang safety, I also like the detachable magazine, its hidden and looks more like a floor plate. My rifle is a micro medallion so it has some engraving that looks classy imo. The bolt also has blackened flutes and the bolt knob is scalloped. I don't care for the trigger but I have lightened the pull with a spring. I also didn't like the finish on the stock, I have since refinished it. It cycles the 284 win cartridges better than any rifle I have, in fact it will cycle empty cases. I have a leupold 2-7 mounted on it. The oal of my rifle is just under 39.5". It's fast handling make it an excellent timber rifle that can reach out to 300 yards if need be. It's a perfect little deer rifle for hunting here on Vancouver island. I don't know why I don't use it more, lol.
