Browning Auto 5 (1989)

I have a browning auto 5 with a 30 inch brl and a fixed full choke. if i have it right i cant use steel. Any thoughts?

I have basically the same gun but 30 years older. I do shoot steel through it, and the gun does serious harm to late season waterfowl. That said, I don't shoot it a lot...maybe a couple boxes of shells a year. Not saying I recommend it, but it can be done!

A good gunsmith should be able to open up the choke to at least modified for a reasonable price.

I have the same gun I had it bored to modified stil shoots a great pattern for decoying birds. I change my wood for a synthetic Ram Line for my Ulitmate waterfowl gun

Is it a Jap or Belgian gun? I believe it should be Jap if it's an 89'?

Are you shooting ducks or geese, over decoys or pass shooting at distance? If over decoys, IC will work wonders with steel. MOD will handle the longest shots you probably can hit.

I am not up on these old brownings since they never fit me right but I seem to recall not shooting steel out of them regardless was more than a choke issue. I seem to recall vent ribs would fall off , receiver damage, etc.
I still think browning states not to use any steel shot in these old guns.
