Hey fellas, my close naibour unfortinatly had to give up some of his cherished firearms due to health reason and he knew I was very interested in his auto 5. So when the time came he passed this beautiful shotgun onto me like his old man did to him.
This browning has a 2 3/4" full choke barrel and I wanted to know if I am able to install a 3" magnum barrel with a invector choke system for example. And is there any modifications required?

I apologize if this has been covered in a previous post, however I was not able to find clear answer on this matter.

*Also the auto 5 is dated from 1948*

Thanks for your time.

Chris

A 12MAG barrel will not fit or work on a standard A5 receiver nor will a standard barrel work on a MAG receiver. The mag tube ring on barrel is differently spaced.

You will only be able to shoot 2 3/4" no matter what barrel/ choke system you use. Easiest in my opinion, have the choke checked to confirm what it is. If full open it up to modified or ic and see how steel patterns. Just remember 2 3/4" only. Just my .02.

I've an A-5 opened up from Full choke to modified in order to run steel shot. I've not done it (run steel, just purchased it that way) but many swear it works fine.

Or find a barrel with the ** symbols on it.
Del Selin had an old A-5 barrel in 2 3/4" a while back.
Get him to open up to a Modified and send'er to ya.
Belief it wuz ribbed tew.

Thanks for all the helpful tips fellas.
I was able to find a local gunsmith who was able to machine the full choke out to IC.
Now let's see how she patterns with steel.

It will work very well with the IC choke and steel shot on migratory birds. It will work equally well with lead shot and upland game. The best of both worlds.

Bearing in mind; that firearms wise, I'm a bit of a Luddite.
So I've shot no new semi's. But I've a A-5 mag 12 and it's a nice gun to shoot, not a smack in the shoulder...rather a 'Calf Kick'. Just like grabbing a calf's hind leg and they give a little double kick. Best way I can describe it.
Folks who have been to a branding will know what I mean, lol

Nice shotgun.

I have a 1964 with a modified choke and it is great for duck hunting.

What happened to the bluing on the receiver?

Finding a replacement barrel will set you up for a $$$ shock.

Read this regarding steel shot.

What do you plan on using the gun for?

The original blueing was so worn off I would say 90% of the receiver was bare metal.
So I had it redone in a brushed polish, to look like my new A5 ultimate.

And it turned out pretty nice IMO.

Iv got a few dedicated Brownings with specific uses but I would like to use this auto5 for when my brother comes down for turkey and the early season duck hunt, keeping in mind she is going to be wrapped up in a camo snake skin sock for obvious reasons haha.

Iv been more so amazed at the story and history behind the auto5 and the enormous impact this shotgun has had on auto loaders as we know it today. We defiantly have a lot to be thankful for with this browning design and I try to make a point to share this with friends that are getting into firearms and hunting.

Also I forgot to mention that the gunsmith reduced the angle at which the barrel tappers into the choke so the loads are forced into the now new IC choke more gradually.

A longer forcing cone... reduces recoil slightly and improves patterns... you used a good gunsmith...
