Browning auto 5 barrel

My plan was to shoot only 2 3/4 inch shells but I wanted to be sure it was doable with the 3 inch mag. barrel. Have you actually done this?
And thanks for the prompt response. Jack

Here is the scrip from the Browning site on the A-5's.

NOTE: 3-inch Magnum 12 gauge and 3-inch Magnum 20 gauge barrels will not fit or work in a Light 12 gauge or a Light 20 gauge
action designed for 2 3/4" shells and vice versa because the feeding and ejection mechanisms are different.

Now a trial is in order.
Where are my two A-5's to see if the barrels will swap over?

a5 barrel

There is a difference between 20 and 12 gauge barrels but for what I want to do,( that is use a 3Inch magnum barrel on a 2 3/4 inch gun), There is no difference in the feeding mechanisms. The ejector is farther back on a 3 inch barrel than on a 2 3/4 inch barrel but the shells should still eject fine.
So, I gather you are going to get out both of your auto 5"s and do this test for me??? Much appreciated.

It would appear that we have a difference of opinion on this subject. Now, who is right? Damn, I hate when that happens. Thanks all for your input. I guess the right thing to do now is to buy a 3 inch mag. barrel and put it on my 2 3/4 inch auto5 which was made in the 1950's. Expensive way to answer my question but I guess the only way.

A bit of an update.
The mag tubes are of identical length.
This is comparing my A-5 3" 1984 A-5 and dad's old 1957 A-5 2 3/4".
The chamber openings are shell length specific.
Meaning the 2 3/4" chamber is that long and the 3" bolt opening is this length.

Now interesting 'nuff, the 3" barrel fits the 2 3/4 action.
One would need to use the 3" tube spring and rings as the barrel/mag tube ring sits further forward.
I tried sticking the 2 3/4 barrel in the 3" receiver and while it fit and opened the bolt manually, the
dang thang got stuck in there.
Had to wiggle-jiggle it apart and sure dint care to try it again.
Dint have this issue with the 3" in the 2 3/4".
And I wouldn't risk trying ammo in it either.
Way too many fawnd memories in these two shewtzguns to pizz around with play time experimints.

So long story short...………...the 3" barrel does slide into the 2 3/4" receiver.
This is all I will type.

Proceed at yer own risk as I will have no liability on my findings.

Ohhhhhhhhhh, wear proper eye protection x 2.

Photos, some wrong way around...…………….'puter illitterateski.

Top one is the 1957 2 3/4" It is the less blue one.
Bottom one is the 1984 3" mag. Bluing is strong on the barrel and receiver.
Easier to make out the items in the photos with this in mind.

If you didn’t feel my answer was correct a simple Google search would have answered your inquiry:

From the browning A5 manual:
"Note: 3-inch Magnum 12 gauge and 3-inch Magnum 20 gauge barrels will not fit or work in a light 12 or light 20 gauge action designed for 2 3/4 inch shells and vice versa because the feeding and ejection mechanisms are different"

browning manual at;

A A5 2 3/4" barrel will fit into a Mag reciever if you change the springs BUT IT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FIRE since the bolt will not go forward enough to release the sear safety even thougth it mates perfectly into the barrel.

The 3" barrel will not fit into a lite receiver

In the 20 gauge series nothing is interchangeable nor will they work

The second photo I posted above shows the two barrels in the wrong receiver.
They will fit in there.
With the action closed, I pushed on the barrel to mimic it firing and the barrel will
slide the bolt open until it locks.

Thats what I was imagining when the question was first posed. The barrels are interchangable on the Franchi 48’s which is the same action so I figured the same would be true with the auto 5. The big difference right off the hop is that the barrel lug and barrel extension on the 48’s is located in the exact same position with the exact same dimensions so there is no need to swap springs. In the Auto 5’s case, maybe the barrel will slide, but it wouldnt properly eject the spent shell or release the shell from the magazine.

Either way, looks like Browning may have made them with a slight difference so that they couldnt be interchanged.
