Browning auto 5 barrel

I have a 30 inch barrel with no sight rail. Should I find a new barrel or cut down the one I have and get the barrel machined for chokes?

Have the barrel measured to see if there is enough meat to accept chokes. If chokes can be installed then a sight base needs to be soldered on to correct alignment.

If you don't necessarily need screw-in chokes, but want a more open pattern, then the barrel can be reamed out to what ever you desire.

If barrels weren't so expensive I'd say just buy another barrel.

I think when he says sight rail he means the vent rib

That is how understood the post. Without a rib a sight base will be needed to lower the muzzle from line-of-sight.

I just got mine opened up to a mod choke by the gunsmith, works great. Mine didn't have enough meat to call for screw in chokes so it was the best solution

If you want it for ducks and steel shot, just have the barrel opened from a Full choke to a Modified. You'll be fine. Ask your local gunsmith.

For screw in chokes on the Browning auto 5, it could be a problem, because the recoiling barrel and the thin walls of the metal could break the choke off the barrel at the muzzel, but I myself have no experience with this situation.

Most of the old a5's are too thin to have choke tubes installed and you cannot fire steel shot out of them even if you did. I know everyone will chime in that I do it just fine but ask browning and see what they will say.No steel period in the old barrels

Look for a steel compatible replacement barrel, I believe Hastings makes some.
