browning auto 5 three shot need help

It's a semi-auto shotgun. That's about all I can tell based on what you've told us.

I have a couple Auto 5's and I'm not sure but I think the Auto 5 got it's name because it is a semi auto and could hold "5" shells.

Are you sure it is not a Remington model 11 Sportsman? They were basically a copy of the Auto 5 that they made with John Mose Browning's permission for North America. (he got a royality for each one made). The sportsman model was designed to take only 3 rounds. I have one in 16 ga.

They did make a 3 shot A5, and those are highly sought after in the US (depending on condition of course).
