browning b78 scope bases

i posted this in hunting rifles and i should have posted it here.
i have recently purchased a B78 in 30/06. i have not been able to get it on paper yet, and i recently discovered the scope bases are not level. the rear base is maybe 1/16"-1/8" higher than the front base.
the gun store tried high wall bases, b78 bases, low wall bases and a mixture of both, all to the same effect.
so ... do i shim the front up or have the rear machined down? or is there another answer?
we are talking about shooting about 8" high at 50 yards.:eek:
 
The model 78 takes two different ring heights. You need a medium in the back and a high in the front. The "issue" was corrected on the 1885s.
If it were me, I would use burris signature series rings as well, of remove any stress on the scope tube which could be caused by a slight misalignment.

yep you're right guys. i found out today when a gunshop owner got in touch with the browning rep.
medium at back, high in front... go figure.
i guess john browning never figured in scopes coming into the market.
