I am hoping to keep original from the factory. It’s just shy of 50 years old and is in exceptional condition. I am open to putting a period correct scope on it if possible. Just trying to educate myself on possible solutions without removing the current bases and rings.Will another set of extension rings solve your issue?….
Might be less expensive than looking for a specific scope to fit.
It’s 6mm rem and will be used on the bench 100 yards at my club and longer at another club I have occasional access to.
I'm thinking an older fixed power Leupold/Redfield/Weaver with a gloss finish and target turrets would look very appropriate on that rifle and work nicely for the shooting you want to do.

Well, I'm definitely too invested in this now (as I go browsing through eBay for vintage target scopes). My vote goes to a Leupold M8 12x40 AO in a gloss finish with the target turrets. 5.8" tube length, 40mm objective should work nicely with your medium rings, and 12x should let you see you bullet holes at 100 yards without being over magnified.
Older scopes had longer tubes. Find a used Leupold or Burris and they should work as well as have the security of lifetime warranties. If Leupold go to their website and enter the serial number of the scope. They will verify that it is genuine. There are a lot of Chinese copies on the market which is why Leupold created the verification site.

As it turns out I do have an older Burris scope on hand. I never considered using it as I had a good leupold and a Minox at home both with 30 inch tubes I had planned to choose from. I picked up the rifle and went straight to my local gun shop to give then the task of setting it up. I didn’t realize the taper on the barrel and special bases needed to function with this rifle. This is a Burris 2x7 made in the USA. Whet are your thoughts?
I don't have any first hand experience, but a bit of quick Googling indicates that both the M8 12x40 and the FX-3 12x40 have ~4" of eye relief, which is certainly more than most scopes I'm shooting.
I had the same thought, but I think the front scope base is on the tapered portion of the barrel.
If you already own it, throw it on the rifle and get out to the range with it. I think you're likely to find a 2-7x scope to be a little under magnified for the shooting you're doing, but no reason not to use it while you figure out what you want for a final configuration.

That is what I plan to do at this point then after listening to advice from the cgner’s I will make a more permanent scope decision and go in the search for it.
