Hello experts!

I am looking to add to my big game hunting arsenal and am looking for input ...

Here is what I have:

Winchester Model 94 in .32 Special
Savage Model 10 in .308 win
Remington 7400 in .270
Savage 110 in .270

I hunt mostly deer, coyotes, black bear .. and potentially moose.
I reload, and have dies already for the listed calibers, and would most likely reload for whatever I purchase next.

I am a lefty, and am considering a semi-auto for my next purchase. I am seriously considering a used BAR.
Should I get a BAR in one of the calibers I already own?
What are your thoughts about calibers?
Is the 300 Win Mag a good step up?

Thanks everyone. I will enjoy reading all the thoughts.

If you like Brownings, why not a BLR in a more substantial chambering than the '94 in 32 Spl? Like your '94, the BLR is a good rifle for either left or right hand shooters. I am ambidextrous and use mine in either direction from the watch. Also, you have the semi-auto covered with the Rem 7400.

If you are going to get a BAR get it in .270Win because you already use that cartridge for the Remington 7400, and you can get rid of the Remington 7400. Or, get it for a different cartridge because you have that Savage 110 for .270Win so you can still get rid of the Remington 7400 (this works even if you don't get a BAR.:stirthepot2: )

i am with thetooner and woodlotowner on saying browning bars are great rifles, and 270 win is a very good caliber choice for it, just so happens i have a bar 270 on EE, besides it being semi and me prefering bolt action guns. they are great shooters and reliable.

Hi Woodlotowner

I did think along those lines too. I’ve had a couple BLR’s in the past (308, 7mm-08). Both were great shooters and I regret selling them. I’ve grown fond of carrying the ol’ 32 special in the deer woods and perhaps this is why I’ve not returned to the BLR camp.
Plus, I do like the semi-auto ...
Thanks

Ha! Thanks Thetooner!
One of my first centerfires was a 7400 in 30-06 that I sold ... and so I’ve had a nostalgic connection with those rifles. Perhaps getting into a BAR would cure that! I’m thinking now of one in a .270
No better way to compare than to have one of each right!?!

Thanks

Impeccable timing on this thread.
Had a phone call last night and my old buddy asked if I wanted or knew anyone that wanted a
BAR Mark III in 7mm rm.
Has a Browning scope of some sort perched on top.
And it is suppose to be in very fine shape.

What is something like this worth?
Browning scope?
Whom made these for Browning.

I have BAR in .308, works fine on moose and has been completely reliable.

Mine is the older "Short Trac" version with a shorter action than for standard length cartridges. Makes for a compact gun. Not sure if the new MkIIIs are this way.

I love my bar in 30-06 but it’s an 8lb gun unloaded and without optics, with scope and ammunition it’s a 9.5lb gun. Don’t know if I’d carry it up and down a mountainside.

Hmmm...you caused me to check weight on mine. Browning says .308 BAR Short trac weighs 6 lbs 10oz. (composite version)

Hi all

Great to hear all the thoughts and info

I’m leaning towards a .270 WSM, and if I can find a good used one in the Short Trac might be the ticket for me. Anyone have a Short Trac?

Thanks

Thanks
