Browning BAR

I have always wanted to get one in .338 then re barrel it to .458WM just for fun.

Safari hunter/gunwriter Jack Lott did one up back in the 70's. The bugger shot well, but Jack noted that recoil was still hefty. I want one. :):runaway:

This one's fer sale Stateside, but she ain't cheap at $3500.oo US. :sok2

Lighter, easier to disassemble, no hinged floorplate, great recoil reduction system, and definitely NOT ugly. Benelli argo E. BARs are great but this is next level for a semi auto hunting rifle.

Thanks alot...... now I'm on the hunt for a Argo e pro or synthetic. That really is a beautiful semi.

I picked up a new one in 270 a couple weeks ago. It's gone back to Browning for review as it wouldn't feed lighter loads. This will be a true test of "The Best There Is".
Needless to say I hope it comes back running like a sewing machine... but with about 3000 HP.

*I should add the accuracy in my testing of ammo was solidly MOA so barrel is mint. I think there was a piston, spring and/or gas orifice issue. TBD. It's in Browning's hands now.

Random comments. For anyone who couldn't/can't handle the magazine attachment system I suspect that you have digital dexterity problems.

A number of posters mentioned having functioning problems. Based on experience I had back in the '70s I suspect some of this may have been related to owners not cleaning the gas system as recommended by the manufacturer. I used my .270 to about double the number of rounds where cleaning was recommended and it started stove piping shells on ejection. Once I found out what needed doing it returned to flawless functioning and remained that way until I moved on to other guns. Mine was a Gr. II Belgium made model.

Since it was nearly 50 years ago I don't remember exactly the size of groups it shot but remember it was easily equal to anything else I owned at the time.

It was not the lightest gun but since I was moose hunting from boats at the time the weight was not a problem. My only real complaint was the way I had to chase empties so they could be reloaded. With FL resizing reloads functioned without problem and case life was satisfactory.

It's not that it isn't usable, it just doesn't make sense to combine a detachable mag and a hinged floorplate... it's inferior to both detachable mag rifles and hinged mag rifles.

It does in a way it gives less places for contamination ingress while still allowing a relatively fast clip swap out and easy unloading when necesary

You can use a Winchester SXR magazine in a BAR Longtrac or BAR Mark 3.

Fully detachable, nicer than the Benelli mag system to insert and remove.

That what I use now after having an R1 for years. Nothing wrong with the R1 tho, I just prefer the SXR mag system.

I have encountered a number of Benelli R1s with feeding issues, very few BARs. I can live with the hinge mag just for this alone!
