hey all out there. Well I just put some work in at a friends hunt camp which has resulted in an open invite to hunt. It is in moose country, and black bears are also on the list. I have a little mini 30 for deer, (which i quite like), but I know it really wont do for moose.
So, last time I was at the range a guy there was dialing in his Browning BAR. He said it was very accurate and reliable, and is his big game gun of choice. Anyone out there have good info on this gun? also on the calibre? Since I have the Ruger I am looking for a dedicated big game shooter - so yes / no on the 300 win mag?

thanks!

The BAR Safari's are really nice, I've shot one in 7mag that was a real shooter (no BOSS). Never shot one of the newer Long/Shorttrac rifles. Any reason you don't want a bolt gun?

Nope, no reason, I'm just trying to figure out which way to go, and am open to, (and hoping for), suggestions.

Wife and I own two of them an 06 and a300. Believe me they are an ausome gun. One thing is that you have to spend time on their clip system. It has to be centered or it will not close , and if you force it you will f--k it up and that can be coastly. The best thing to do is what we do and that is spend time with it to get it right.
The action is very smooth and I feel very confident with it for me , but mostly for her.she shoots a 10-22 Ruger and finds the simillarity very usefull. We shoot Nosler partittions in 165 and 180 gr. sp's. There is not much out there we couldn't stop.

I have the BAR Safari in 308 Win. its a rock solid accurate rifle and highly recommend this rifle. The BAR in 300 Win would be an excellent choice for moose if you choose but I find the 308 Win to be plenty effective on anything from deer to moose.

I've fired a BAR in 300 win mag and i personally don't like it. It feels like a carbine to me and i don't like carbines with magnum cartridges. No real reason behind it, it's just what i like. I've put on weight since firing it but i was maybe 5'8 and 170 pounds at the time i shot it and the recoil was a little too much for me. If you're a little guy you might want to think about one in 308 or something along those lines. Your choice is also going to have to depend on your type of hunting i.e. distance (300+ yards) or close range (under 300). Good luck and i hope you find exactly what you're looking for.

I have an older, late 80's 308 and my dad has a late 90's 30-06 (check my sig ;) ). Both are Belgian made and have never given us problems. I have taken moose with the 308 - non-issue.

I have a Made in Belgium BAR in 3006 that I bought used in 1976. Carried it deer and moose hunting ever since. Only problem was a couple failures of bolt to lock up under extremely cold conditions. Good cleaning and switch of lubricant seems to have cured it. An amazing accurate rifle ( I think) for an auto loader. Groups around 1 1/2" at 100yds with favourite handload. It would still be my first choice for hunting where very good accuracy and fast follow up shots might be a possibility. The gun is relatively heavy but handles nicely and recoil is quite manageable.

I've tried pretty much every hunting semi that's around, and the BAR is the best overall. Very accurate and reliable. The only downer is the mag system, which actually isn't that bad once you're used to it. The Winchester SXR is also great, if not better (made by browning) and the benelli is also great, just not as accurate.
