Browning BL .22 vs Henry .22

Wos, I see you're here in Chilliwack as well. You should bring your Henry or one of the others out for the club's Speed Steel events. Let me know you're coming and I'll bring my Henry or the Rossi pump and we can have some fun showing all those semi auto guys in the rimfire carbine category that they can't have it their own way all the time... :D If you don't normally shoot them rapidly I can give you some hints from my cowboy action lever gunning. But either way they are a lot of fun to use that way.

Sounds like fun! Do I need to belong to the chwk range? I am not a member there. I'm a member of the Princeton range. And when is the next shoot?

Seeing that neither is made in Canada, go for the one made in North America. Henry Golden boy would be my choice. Value for Henry's may jump over the next few months because of the whole free trade thing.

I had a Browning BL2-22 lever when I was a kid - an absolutely beautiful inexpensive well made gun. The sights out of the box were perfect.

best, Steve

Does anyone know what the max legal magazine available for the Henry in Canada is?

It's a rimfire. It doesn't use a pistol magazine? Then no limit AFAIK. http://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-98-462/FullText.html

I just bought an 'as new' Henry Golden Boy 'Youth' model off the EE for a good price. Had the 'adult' version but found the butt stock too long for comfort. Wasn't worth the cost of a replacement or having it chopped, so I sold it. The 'Youth' model has a 13" lop, same as my CAS carbines and 44-40 Uberti Henry.

Watched a review of the blued model 'Youth' model and tho' the guy was big, he loved it. My wife has a Marlin 39A and I wish they would bring back the "Mountie" carbine version.

Always thought that Browning was a little odd with the short stroke action, but nicely built. The 9422s are great, but too pricey for most folks.

I wonder what the OP chose over 2 years ago? That being said, I had a BL22 and liked and hated the short throw lever, also found the comb way too high. I had a set of high fiber optic sights set up. My uncle then bought a Henry, then my boss asked me to clean up his uncles old 9422. After cleaning all 3 I sold the BL. And borrow the Henry and Winnie when I feel like alot of fun for cheap. I should bring that 9422 to speed steel and see how I fair against myself with my 1022...

Shot my new Golden Boy youth model today ..... same lop as my Uberti '66 carbine and 44-40 Henry. Action is as slick as hell and not the short stroke of the BL 22. Cute as hell in the bargain!

Offhand at 15 yds I could keep 4 out of 5 rds in a 1/2" group with an operator caused flyer. At 30 yds a 3" group offhand. Not a tack driver but all I need in a fun .22 plinker.

Ammo was Federal bulk. CCI "Choot 'em!" was a close 2nd for accuracy and but higher with the same sight setting.

I'm going to enjoy this little gem!

Great info here for somebody else tossing up the BL or Henry.

Had the BL in my hands about 1hr ago. The LTD EDN maple stock, wow, so nice. Almost a shame to take it into the bush.
The Henry IMO is more of a utilitarian gun, where the BL is "art".

Henry was $449 (reg price) and the BL was "on sale" for $899 ($100 off).

You really have to shoulder both. My BL's fit and finish was very nice but I could not get a proper sight picture with the high stock.
The short lever throw is fast but I found the trigger heavy and stiff.

The Henry's fit me best (except for the Golden Boy). The lever action is longer but so smooth and a great trigger (~4lbs).
My newest Henry (H001L carbine/large loop) is my new favourite and for $369 BNIB I'm not too concerned about carrying it into the woods.....

I’ve handled and shot both.
Henry GB and Browning BL22.
The GB was as heavy as some dangerous game cf rifles and the Browning too expensive.
Not impressed by the fake “brassite” on the GB.
Henry is the “cheap suit” of firearms with fake metal, painted receivers and sporting plastic parts.
Neither of them matched up to my Winchester 9422.
The BL22 came closest.

I love my Henry Frontier and with the right ammo, it's pretty accurate.
At 50 yards the 36 gr cci groups under an inch, if i benched it properly i'm sure i can do better.

I was resting my elbow on a table and shooting pretty quick

Pot metal receiver on the Henry, with some kind of cheesy cover over it? No thanks! Seen way too many Henrys with cracked receivers from a bit of stress on the barrel. The BL-22 is easily double or better the quality of the Henry. Winchester 9422 is way up there as well but current pricing is getting steep.

Have read of these cracking issues you speak of. Have never seen one, nor know of anyone who has seen one in person. I have had mine since the early 2000's with well over 10K rounds. And as somebody above has posted, the trigger has only smoothed out. No other wear to report of.

The first time I shot my BL the trigger was so "hard" I thought a safety button was on.....lol. When the trigger finally "broke" it was crisp.
The BL's long gone and my Lever itch is scratched with a Henry 16" large loop. Very handy little rifle....
