Browning BLR in .308?

Hi Max,
I recently bought a MINT STEEL '81 BLR 308 from a member here and was wondering what your rings and bases are ? Weaver/Weaver ?Which modle rings ?
Thanks.

The bases are weaver style and the rings that came with it are cheap old Tasco rings. I just replaced them with Burris Zee Rings yesterday, I picked the 1", med height in a gloss finish without the synthetic inserts. They are really nice and just the right height for me. Thanks

What mounts do you use for your scope?
I think santa is bringing me a 300 wsm blr and I am thinking of putting a 3x9x40 on it with the Browning ring base combo mounts but not sure if I need standard or intermediate height with a 40mm scope.
Nice set up

My hunting gun is a blr in .308 with a 3 x 9 x 40 vari-x 1 on it.

I love it and the moose hate it.

Currently,on my 308 BLR,I have Weaver Aluminum Bases and Leupold Rifleman Aluminum Low Ring lookalikes ( gunshow buy). I had to remove the Browning rear sight ( which I would never use anyway ) to mount my 3-9x40 Bushnell Elite Scope. The front bell just clears the barrell and that's just how I like it...Never was a fan of high mounted scopes.

Handle both guns ( stocks ) and see which you prefer.
How far you can shoot it depends on you.Snipers shoot 308's a looong way...

So do I.I could have bought a new aluminum framed BLR years ago but prefered to find a steel frame BLR.Finally I found one..I may buy and mount steel bases & rings yet...

I have a BLR 81 in .308, saw some comments about it being an accurate gun....well, with the right load thay are easily capable of keeping pace with the best bolt guns. Mine shoots .5 MOA with a 165 grain Hornady bullet. Great rifles!

R-P brass
Hornady 165 gn. spire point
CCI-200 primer
42.8 gn IMR 4895 powder

I have a couple of targets in my wallet, one 100-yard and one 200-yard....I'll try to get photos of em for ya. the 100-yard is basically a cloverleaf and the 200 is roughly an inch CTC.

I have been looking into getting a blr in 7mm-08 in the stainless takedown model and was wondering about scope mounts and sling studs.

Any thoughts and tips would be greatly appreciated.

Leupold...

I have been completely turned off the Leupold "turn in" style mounts after trying to mount 2 sets on a Rem 760 and Win M70. The back is mounted so that it makes the gap about an extra half inch longer than a weaver style. If you flip the rear Leupold mount around it hangs into the action opening on a bolt action.

My BLR has Weaver 2 piece mounts and Burris Zee Rings, this system works awesome on my gun! If you can find a 1 piece Weaver mount for the BLR go with it, just makes it that much better!

thanks for the tips. i just brought it home havent found the scope i want for it yet but leaning to wards the leupold 2-7 as i have it on another rifle and it has stood up very well. oh it didnt come with studs but looks like it will be easy to install some

I have a Savage 99c lever in 308 which is my fave deer rifle. Balance and lever travel are both excellent. If I had not found a Savage I would have gone for a Browning without a thought. They have always made good guns. Have a BPS Trap that is a delight to shoot and a pretty gun to look at as well. They have the "fit and finish" thing down real good.

anything in 308 will do the job, i like my BLR, its light and shoot great. i have a bushnell banner on it and all the game have drop on the first round.

The action is shorter and lighter on the .308. BLR's have been very popular over here in Quebec for both deer and moose. Personally, I prefer the old straight grip configuration, but that's just a personal preference.

The one my buddy has in .308 was quite accurate and a fine well-balanced rifle in the field. He<s had his for overe 25 years and loves it.

:D
The .308 Win. is better in a lever action than the .30-06 Sprng. because of the shorter stroke length to cycle the cartridge through the action.

I found that bullets over 165 grains don't group well (at all) in the BLR I own & it produced "patterns" rather than groups with any 180 grain ammo I tried whether factory or hand loads.

I have a new Browning BLR "Takedown" (Japanese not Belgian) with a straight grip that I use for deer hunting & found the Remington factory 150 grain Core-Lokt ammo superbly accurate in this rifle (3/4" - 3 shot groups).

If I use the gun for moose I'll go with the Remington factory 165 grain Scirocco ammo.

Blr .308

So I thought since there was some interest in scope rings for the BLR I would post a few pics of what I did. I removed those crappy Tasco rings and installed a set of Weaver Signature Zee Rings in medium height and gloss finish. I got the ones without the synthetic inserts because I didn't think it was worth another $25, and I like the regular Zee rings. They have great craftsmanship and were easy as pie to install. The Med height is great for me as it sits high enough to not see much of the open sight and my eyes are almost looking thru the scope with a little cheek adjustment. It may look like the scope is mounted a little far back, but with it on 1X it is perfect and on 4X I still have to move my head a little further foward for perfect eye releif. I wasn't willing to mount it any further back than this though.
