Hello all, I am looking at buying a gun for my 40th birthday. I've always wanted a browning BLR, in a stainless barrel with laminate stock, chambered in a 7mm mag. I'm also looking at the Sako A7. What would you folks out there recommend?? I am very curious how you guys with the BLR's are happy with them or not as I don't know anyone who has one. I know a few guys with Sako's or Tikka's so I am able to get info out of them on these gun's. I have a few wood bolt action gun's and I would like the fact of having a composite stock, not as much maintenance required. It would be a gun mostly for moose hunting. I already have 2- 30-06 guns, so I would like to try the 7mm mag cartridge. Any info would be great. Thank you.

Well you're talking about 2 entirely different platforms here. They are both nice guns but if the cartridge you want is 7mmRM, I would personally go with the A7. The long range capability of the 7mm will be better utilized out of a bolt action.

That being said, if you've always wanted a BLR, buy a BLR.

I've wanted to try a BLR in 325wsm for a while now.

I have a Sako A7 Stainless in 7mm-08. I love my rifle, truly love it, smoothest bolt, beautifully crisp trigger pull, Mags are steel lipped instead of all plastic.... Could say a lot more.

But, if you want a BLR, buy a BLR. If you've wanted one forever, as much as you may like the Sako, it just won't be a BLR.

Cheers!

yep, in 7RemMag get the Sako A7. Long action BLR's are monsters and as Doug says "clunky"! I love and have a bunch of BLR's, but all are in short action. They are so sweet! I have a Sako A7 in 7mm-08 and love that one, as well. I'm a pussy woosy and don't care much for the recoil of the 7RemMag. I draw the line at 30-06 in my Ruger No.1A.

I only have two BLR's at present, in .308 & .358, but would love one in .260... I concur with SA's for the BLR... consistent with my current downsizing trend, I would probably let the .308 go if I find the .260...

I have a BLR in 358win and I love it, but I wouldn't want one in a long action magnum caliber,...to me a lever gun should be fairly short and quick pointing. So I would say go with the A7 Sako for 7mm magnum. I don't have an A7 but I am sure it is a great rifle.

BLR = short action
Bolt action = long action

Have you considered a 300 WSM in a BLR,...they would only be a couple inches longer than the 308, 358, 243 cals, (20" barrel vs 22" barrel) and maybe you could find one in 7mm WSM,...I'm pretty sure they used to make them in 7mm WSM, but they don't list them on their site right now.

Just bought a blr in 300wsm the gun is beautiful to carry, and shoulders like it was built for me.Can't say much about accuracy as i am still deep in load development, you won't be sorry if you buy the blr.

Wow, thanks guys. Lots of info, howerver I am not really versed in the short action calibers as until the present time, I've always shot animals with my '06, never had the time to spend researching and talking to people about other caliber's just wanted to take time off work, get an animal, get the meat in the freezer then put the gun away till next year. Life is starting to present me with more time on my hands and I plan on getting into a different caliber and eventually doing my own reloading and spending more time with my gun, if that makes any sence. Again, why would the short action mag's be a better fit in the BLR over the 300 win mag or 7mm mag?

Well,...the only difference would be length and weight,.....

Short standard calibers, 308, 358, 243, = over all length 40"
Barrel length 20"
Weight 6lb 8oz

Short magnum calibers, WSM 7MM, 270, 300 = over all length 42"
Barrel length 22"
Weight 6lb 12oz

Standard long action calibers, 270, 30.06, = over all length 43"
barrel length 22"
weight 7lb 4oz

Long action magnum calibers, 7mm, 300win, = over all length 45"
barrel length 24"
weight 7lb 12oz

So you can see that the BLR in 7mm magnum is quite a large piece of machinery,...alot bigger and heavier than the short action BLR.

I have a BLR's in 243,308,325WSM, And 450 marlin can't recommend them enough. The clip system is what is the best feature of the BLR
PS check out the cost of ammo before you commit to a short mag, it's a great gun and calibre but feeding that 325 is a #####

Hahahahahhaahaha..................he typed that nawty C.................L..............I...............P...............................................werd.................:runaway:

ok ok, what are those last couple posts referring too?? lol And another question, I've heard that the BLR grouping is nothing to write home about. Can anyone who owns one tell me what kind of grouping they are getting with factory ammo??

dats just dem good old boys having some fun! Some folks that aren't with today's program still don't wanna call a DM (detachable magazine) a clip! This has been debated amongst many men and it has be decided that either word is A-ok to use. There are still some around that just don't want to let go. Don't worry about them, they will get left behind in the dust!

As for the grouping, you can write home about, I do, when I tell the folks back home, that I filled the freezer again with my BLR!;)
