Hello,

Have owned my bps for about a year now in woodland camo 28” barrel. Recently went to shoot some trap with it and was using shot size 7.5 2’3/4 length shells federal brand and noticed the shell was not always being picked up from the magazine tube. Ejection was fine however I was loading 1 round at a time as per range rules. I haven’t had a chance to go out and try different shells however just wondering if anyone’s come across this issue previously. Perhaps I left some oil while cleaning it or it didn’t like the cheap shells.
Any advice appreciated and will get out at the range to test if time is more generous in 2019

Any time I have had issues like this with bps it was from crud and old oil build up especially in the mag tube
I would give it a real good cleaning especially the mag tube , spring etc
Cheers

Perfect, will be top priority once time allows before my next shoot. Thank you will report back if resolved

Just don't take the trigger out unless you take some time to see how to do it or are shown
Not for everyone
Also I don't know what year your bps is but I fixed one also with a split mag tube follower that would cause the issues you are having
All the best

I have a BPS and have had similar issues.
Whenever I pulled the barrel at the end of the season for a cleaning, I always had an issue of not picking up the second round.
If I took the gun into a gunsmith for cleaning at the end of the season, no issue.
I've learned two things from the experience,
Firstly, I'm an idiot and shouldn't do anything beyond buying and shooting guns and leave everything else to someone with two brain cells to rub together to generate some heat.
Secondly, there is some little trick to assembling a BPS to ensure that it will cycle properly.
I have no understanding what that it is, but I will be following this thread to hopefully get the same information that you now seek.
Until then my 1100 will see more daylight.
Good luck.

You are saying that you load one round in the mag tube and then "pump" it into the chamber? Why would you do that?

RR

Correct, only way I believe since the arms come up once the pump is open position
Wrong you can load a BPS one shell at a time by turning the gun up side down . bringing the slide all the way back .then set the shell on top of the carrier forks and hold it in place with your thumb .as you slide the action closed it will drop into action and pushed into the chamber by the bolt . Or you can bring the slide back then slightly ahead so the carrier drops down then drop the shell in and move the slide forward pushing the shell into the chamber .

That is exactly how it's done.

Crud and oil build up in the chamber and mag tube. How does one get oil build up in the mag tube? Maybe rethink your cleaning strategies.

RR

Most oil/debris/pocket lint etc. build up in the tube comes from your hands when loading cartridges into the magazine. The second source is when the loading gets sticky and some "oil" is sprayed into the mag tube to help things. So you see it is possible to get an oil /crud build up in the mag tube.

What is the first thing most will do if they start having issues and think the mag tube is involved
Tip the gun up and drown the tube 99% of the time with extra lube of some form but mad trapper has it right

I cleaned one last year for a friend that I assumed knew how to clean a shotgun since he has been doing it for 40 years
I learned very quickly he didnot know how to clean a bps or was scared to try
Most take the dam trigger out ONCE and after they get that back in or take it to someone to get back in never really clean the gun again
He had more crap fall out of that mage tube from a broken plug to pieces of bark, pine needles, gravel etc etc
Cheers

Thanks for all the insight. Everything is now clean, can confirm there was oil around the magtube entrance perhaps my error for careless cleaning. Appreciate the tips on the alternate loading method, will give it a try next time I’m able to get out and shoot along with an update if the cleaning resolved the issue.
