Hey guys,

Excited to get my first gun which should be here in a day or two. I want to do a good job of the initial clean (it's new). In the manual it suggests just cleaning the barrel and around the port and stock to get rid of factory grease, but to not push out the pins to take out any of the action. However I've also read that it should be totally stripped down or taken to a gunsmith off the bat, which I personally think is a waste of money for a new gun.

Any other thoughts? As well, after a good cleaning do you then run a patch through the barrel with a bit of gun oil or something on it to keep it protected/lubed?

Nooby questions but never cleaned a gun before so want to do it right. As well, if anyone with a BPS specifically has some insight I'd be curious as the ejection is a little different from most.

Thanks.

With regards to any excessive packing grease, you're lucky because a good portion of the internals on the BPS can be easily accessed after you remove the barrel. Any obvious and obtrusive globs of grease can be removed using a Q-tip but I don't suspect there would be too much to begin with. I would'nt worry about taking it to a smith so early, save your cash and look at the zillion or so youtube vids on BPS assembly/disassembly. The first few times you do it yourself you'll cuss the gun (and most likely yourself...) repeatedly but with practice it becomes much easier. There really is no reason to disassemble more than once a season or if you take it out on an extremely rainy day.
If I were you I'd concentrate more on the external parts such as the receiver and the barrel. If they become wet, dry them as soon as you get a chance and LIGHTLY coat them with a bonafide gun oil (Remoil,G96,Hoppes etc) but definitely not WD40.

Yeah, tell me about it. Think I got the second last one in Canada from all I've been able to find. There's one listed on the Ellwood Epps site right now...Got mine from Lake Huron, being shipped as we speak (slooooooowly....thanks Canada Post...expedited shipping my ass).

There's a few youtube videos that walk through how to take apart the BPS. Its a PITA and I only do it once a year tops, lot more involved than taking apart an 870 I'll say. But there is absolutely no need to go to a gunsmith to take it apart.

The first few times you re-assemble it you will see a need for a third hand, so much so that Brownells makes a tool specifically for that function.
With time however you will figure out how to keep all the parts lined-up properly to allow the trigger group to be installed.

Hey all. Got my gun today! Wiped it down, cleaned it (no disassembly yet) and looks good to go. Can't wait to try it out. Just a quick question though:

There is a bit of wiggle on the forearm. Not in the pump direction but it rotates a bit. Is some play normal is there possibly something loose?
