Browning BPS vs. Remington 870 Fieldmaster

Thanks for the insight BB07. What is a reasonable price for an 870? Im flyin blind. New from Epps or Cabelas is >$900

Shop around a bit. Epps often marks up stuff. They will price match though. They had the combo version of the Fieldmaster not too long ago. I got one, very pleased with it. Very versatile.

I own a BPS and have a couple of spare barrels. One minor downside to the BPS is that the receivers are not universally interchangeable between vent rib and non-ribbed versions: receivers originally sold with VR barrels have a small step up rib that transitions to the barrel rib, and this step up is missing on some BPS model receivers. Attaching a VR barrel to a non-VR receiver creates a sharp transition. Some non-VR barrels (e.g. Game Guns) have a short false rib to eliminate that transition when put on a VR receiver.

It's a small issue as there aren't many BPS receivers without the step up, but it's a minor quibble that I have since my BPS receiver happens to be one of those.

The price varies greatly depending on condition, accessories etc and like everything else prices have skyrocketed. My idea of reasonable and yours may be very different but I'm guessing the average would be between 500 to 700 for a good used one, give or take and a Wingmaster will go for more than an Express if condition is equal, although older Wingmasters with the 2 3/4" receivers don't seem to command as high of a price as a 3".
Type 870 into the search function and check out the various EE ads.
If money isn't an issue I'd prefer to buy a new one unless you come across a good deal and as I said I have no problem shooting a right hand gun left handed and prefer that with all the barrel options available.

Anytime, being left handed you may prefer a bps. I’d look for a nice lightly used hunter. I’d be iffy about the left handed Remingtons. I’ll be the first to say my experience is limited with the left handed models. You’ll lose some aftermarket support and versatility of barrels with a left handed 870. I shoot with more than a handful of left handed 870 owners, not one has a left handed model. Hope this helps, let us know what you ultimately go with! Enjoy

Ill be sure to update with some photos this Saturday!

Also, thanks everyone for your input - this community is definitely living up to its great reputation!

The other thing is I am left handed, which makes the bottom eject and tang safety much more attractive. Lefty guns seem like they have a price hike on them!

I’m a southpaw and I’ve never found a bottom eject to be any more left hand friendly, I own a couple Ithaca’s. You can’t drop a shell in quick and port load a bottom eject shotgun, I’ve never been hit in the face with a shell on a side eject shotgun either. I’d rather have rh pump guns or semi auto rifles, as your support hand is on the right side to rack the bolt or port load a couple quick rounds with having to reach under/over the receiver like a rh shooter would. Your on the rh side of the gun so looking into the port and seeing an empty chamber makes it easy to clear and prove it safe, I’ve never had dirt interfere in function so bottom eject isn’t a huge deal for me.

There's a left hand 870 on the EE now but might be more than you care to spend. I'm left handed and have zero issues shooting a RH 870, which can usually be found for a reasonable price.

The problem with LH 870’s is there is next to no extra barrels available for them, I’ve only ever seen 28” vent rib barrels being sold. Which is the one thing that is great about an 870. I have 12.5”, 14”, 20”, 22”, 28” barrels for my 870’s and clones, you can’t find different barrels for a LH model. Kinda defeats the purpose of buying an 870.

This is what I needed to hear. Coming from zero experience so good to know shell ejection not an issue. Also agree, REM doesnt make sense LH due to barrel availability. Very helpful, thanks!

I got my Wing master for $400 this fall.

Just search a gun you want on GP then subtract ~$100/5%from the asking prices to gauge where they are actually selling at.

What is "GP" for the uninitiated? I would like to search there!

GP = General Purpose, as in GPMG (General purpose machine gun)

Or Greener GP

Or Gun Post...

I really like the BPS. Used one in 12 gauge 30" barrel for sporting clays and skeet for several years more than 10000 rounds through it and no issue's. Heavy enough to absorb the the recoil of heavy waterfowl loads also. Have a BPS uplands special in 20 I use for grouse also and it has about 5000 rounds through it shoots skeet and sporting clays also. Went to a maxus sporting and a Browning GTI for sporting and skeet now. That said if I could only have one shotgun it would be a BPS.

Buy the BPS... tang safety and bottom ejection. That should be a no brainer for a lefty.
