Browning BSS

(It's also nice no longer worrying about opening a thread titled "Browning BSS" and then reading that it's about chopping off 10" of barrel and hacking off the stock to make a zombiebear gun. :) )

There's zombiebear's now?? When will the horror end?

I have a BSS 20 Ga. with the pistol grip stock. Improved and modified. Years ago a smith made a set of 30-30 barrells and an other forearm that fit the gun.I have shot the rifle lots and it still works perfect. I have only shot the shotgun a few times and it works perfect. The BSS is a good strong action. A smith in the US made many double rifles from the action.

Wut?! I was gonna heck 12" off and make it a zombear gun?!!!!1
Can I shoot dragon's breath out of this?

J/k. No one have a heart attack SVP.

Ok, just got back from the store last weekend. After playing with both guns. I agree with everyone's opinion. The sauer is a much livier gun, and a bit lighter (for a 12). However, I ended up with the BSS. It fits me very well, as well as having the familiar feel of a chunky Browning O/U. It carries like a wet rug, but swings pretty well.

I took it out to my buddies place to shoot a few clay and patterned it. It shoots slightly high, about 70/30. The chokes are slightly loose for IC/MOD. Both point to same POI at about 35 yds.

Here's my dilemma, I kinda feel in love with this gun and might want to take it out for a few more duck hunts. What are my options?

1) I patterned a few rds of tung matrix and they pattern very loose...not to mention it costed about 25 bucks to shoot a few card board.

2) Shoot some steel #4s and limit the amounts of rds through it to 1-2 boxes a season.

3) ???

I'll take some pics when I get home.

You should start a thread with pics on that. I'd like to see it.

I bought a 12 ga BSS years ago (like 20) just for the express purpose of building a double rifle on it. Haven't got around to it and it sits forlorn and lonely in the gun safe. I guess I should take it bird hunting. I should restock it though, I find the Browning pistol grip stock fairly clumsy feeling. I wonder how much better it would feel with an English style stock and fore end? - dan

To me, hunting Wood ducks is like shooting on a skeet field - close and fast. I'd open up that MOD barrel to the same IC dimension, and limit steel size to #4.
