I just picked up a Browning Buckmark semi 22 rifle with a bull barrel and a nice laminated stock. It's my first .22.

I thought it'd be a great little gun....

It shoots Fed Premium like total poo at 25 yds, and it does NOT like the cold. The action gets real stiff and won't cycle or even chamber from an open bolt.

Anyone with cold temp experience with this rifle?

Also, how sensitive is .22 to misfires and inaccuracy from the cold in your experience? Is this normal?

Keebler, try putting 5 or 10 boxes of shells thru it and check for accuracy again.I have had 2 new buckmark rifles and both had a HUGE improvement in accuracy after about 500 rounds. The cold may make a difference too, I know my anschutz 54 will shoot smaller groups when it is warm. As far as reliability, try a thorough degreasing of the action and try it in the cold again. A few hundred rounds down range may help this too as the action gets broken in. Both of mine were very reliable, much better than most 10/22's I've shot. Good luck!

Hmmm. Must shoot more.

Geez, that's almost like ..... fun! Thanks!

What about the .22 misfires though? I had some that didn't work after two times through the beast!!

i've had a tonne of rimfire misfires through various guns... unbelievably i even had an entire bad lot of eley ammo... almost 2-3 misfires per box...which for eley is pretty bad...
remington... yah i've done multiple strikes and still had misfires on occasion...take them apart...some don't have primer in them haha.

Do you have any grease on it? Grease will gum up the action in the cold. A very light coat of a thin oil (CLP is good) is all you need for cold weather shooting.

Agreed. I hunt with my BMC all wiinter.....dissasembel, de-grease everything, then apply a LIGHT coat of gun oil to the parts. Will take care of the issues.

As far as the FTF's go? I would be more likely to blame the ammo rather than the rifle. The ones that failed....did they have strong strikes in the rim? If they did=ammo.

I agree. I think there might be too much oil on it and its getting gummy in the cold and preventing the action from closing completely and causing misfires....

Hmmm. When I had oil on it in my back yard it froze up from blowing snow.

You're right though, I cleaned it and put a little of the same grease that works so well on my M14.

OK. Light lube it is.

Thanks guys. I'll let you know how I make out.

Even bolt guns get stiff in the cold, too much oil is a bad thing in the cold. If you are shooting outside in the real cold make sure you properly clean it afterwards, you would be surprised how much water can get in there, this goes for all guns. I really want to get a Buckmark in the summer so I hope this is just a grease thing.
