I'm looking into a used Gold 10 (not the light version) built in the late 90s. Private sale, VG condition, $750. Thinking of dropping the hammer on it but have a few questions.

What should I look for in this gun to determine if it checks out? Are there any specific problematic areas with this model I should be asking about (I'm only familiar with Gold 12/Silver and 11-87s)? I plan to strip it down to look at it before I buy.

Also, how hard are upgrades to get for it? I've seen something about a spring kit (sure cycle?) that's a big step up over the original spring. And I wouldn't mind getting a black synth stock set for it.

A few years ago I found a nicely priced Gold light 10 gauge at Epps for a buddy.
A few months later I found, on another forum, a regular older model Gold 10 gauge for his brother. Niether guys used the internet.

They have been using them for duck/geese ever since and as far as I'm aware have no complaints.

I was very impressed with Gold Light especially. It feels much lighter than my SP10 and yet soaked up recoil just as well. The Gold light was a little more complicated to strip down than my SP10 but I havent seen the regular taken apart. I believe they are the same from the manual I saw.

As said previously try and put a couple of three rounders through them, but these guns are generally well made and very reliable.

Thanks. I'll see if I can shoot it first before I buy.

Plan is to reload for it, a bit of a project for the off season. :)

Hi: I bought one of the 10ga gold when they first came out and two 12ga 3 1/2 since. Never had an issue with them other than I find I have to be real careful with the old 10 since the matt finish on the steel marks easily.
Other than that keep them cleaned and they will work just fine.I reload all of the 10ga steel , always have and will be starting to do 12ga steel 3 1/2 this year.

I have a Gold 3.5" 12 and it works great. The only stoppages I have had with it are as a result of the action getting dirty with unburned powder. Knock out the trigger group and give it a good scrub and I was back in business.
