After much begging my wife agreed to a new shotgun purchase. I had my heart set on bps 10 but was "mistakingly" shown the gold light 10 instead. I havent researched the semi,s that browning makes, but what a beauty. So now my questions are -has anyone any experience with the Gold Light? Should I stick with pump? Should I look to other manufacturers? And finally What should I be looking to pay-it seems there is a difference of over $350 between the local shops/maybe you know a better supplier. P.S. before you ask why 10 I mostly hunt geese. Thanks Guys.

I have had them all. Run from the BPS. Browning auto is a work of art and the Remington is a work horse.
Bashaw has a Remington for $1399.00, 26 inch barrel. I have the same one and love it.

sk, why run from the BPS? I have no experience with the 10 but the 12 and 20 BPS sure treat me well.

The 10 is a monster. It has a sharp comb that beat my face to a pulp. The stroke on the pump is LONG. If you are 6'6" and have orangutan arms it would be alright. It functioned well enough but was just plain ugly to shoot.

I've had them all also as you know and agree 100% the BPS never fit me right. A couple boxes of shells over two days and my shoulder would be purple during early season with just a camo shirt on and I am no small boy at almost 300 pounds with no fat on the shoulder. It would also beat my face somewhat.
To the OP I have two gold 10 ga but not the light weights the older steel receivers. Bought one when they first came out and never an issue with it then bought the other to replace the BPS which was my back up gun. I do most of my goose hunting out of province so need to take two guns just in case one gets damaged on the trip etc
I didnot buy a light weight thinking it would not take the pounding that the originals can but so far and they have been out a long time now I have never heard one giving an issue. You have to keep them very clean however and mine only like certain hulls, no winchester.
The remingtons are way better in that area will shoot fine dirty, cycle all hulls and can take more abuse. If you are going to shoot a 10ga for geese the gold or the sp-10 is the way to go.
Plus I like the look of them.

I have heard good reviews on the SP 10. But is it still in production? I cant find it on Remingtons site or any suppliers sites. I have seen a few Ithacas in the e.e but at the same cost of a new gold. Are there any other manufacturers producing 10's?

No new Sp-10's being made that I know of and used you will pay more for one than a used gold. On the ithaca 10 they are not the same gun as a sp-10 like many will tell you and the parts willnot interchange.
It would have to be real cheap with choke tubes for me to buy an ithaca and yes I did have a full choked one years back.
No other 10ga semi's out there to my knowledge.

I have not been able to find any used gold or gold light or sp10 only the ithaca and they want a grand or more. Is there any tips as to where to look to find used 10's

Try a WTB listing on the EE. That is where I got my second gold.

Been a couple on in the past 2 years but they go quick.

I find the 10 gauge no different than the 12s that I own. I am just 6' tall and never thought I had orangutan arms...all the BPS's I have shot fit me. Must just be the dimensions of them and me get along so well...sorry you found them not to your liking, I think they are a very well put together gun.

I own the Remington SP-10, Browning Gold Light 10, Browning BPS 10 and a couple of sxs 10's. Stay away from the Gold Light. I have found that it jams quite often on both hand loaded and factory ammunition. The spent hull doesn't eject properly and gets half jammed in the action once every 10 shots or so. I find my SP-10 jams about the same frequency. I'd go with a pump or a sxs if you are set on a 10 gauge. I must say, though, the 10 gauge is still my go to gun for large geese! The 10 gauge truly can reach out and touch them.

Good luck!

I have an SP-10 and mine never jams. It works everytime I pull the trigger. I shoot both Remington and Winchester factory loads out of it. My SP-10 sees between 1 and 2 cases of cartridges each season between me and my boys shooting it.

I have buddies that have the Brownings - the BPS and the Gold auto. They like them. Both are heavy, which is good for a 10 gauge. Pump verse auto, I prefer softer recoiling autos over pumps when shooting big loads. See which one fits you the best, and see if the tromboning of the pump is ok or not.

I agree with Uke hunter in that the big 10 is an awesome goose gun, and can really reach out there and pound them.

Interesting my sp-10 which is actually skhunters old one will eat everything with no jams as was the one I bought years ago and sold like an idiot. Don't think it jammed on him either when he owned it. Now both of my golds and they are steel receivers will not cycle winchesters without tearing them apart and that includes factory or reloads but loves federals and remingtons.
Do you recall what type jams in your gold light model the most.

Some hard on the old coyotes also with home loads of no. 4 buck shot and a tight choke. Not for saving the pelt that is for sure. :)

The SP-10 I have now and the one I traded to 3macs1 never missed a beat with handloads( Rem & Fed ) never tried Winchesters. If it is jamming that often I would blame the ammo not the gun.

I have tried all ammo in this gun. Both Federal and Remington! Both factory and hand loads! All of them jam and don't properly eject the spent hull from time to time. It does get very annoying!

Can't jam with a good old SxS!

Then again, I for one, would not want to shoot a 10 gauge SXS or pump, for days at a time, due to the recoil. I don't even use 3-1/2" loads in a 12 gauge, because I haven't had any problem killing geese with 3" loads. But if I did feel the urge to use a 10 gauge, it would be a semi auto.

Can't fire three rounds every rally either nor develop the best round / choke combo's for different hunting set ups since they are probally fixed choke. If all reloads giving the problem I would ask how you resize and if you use a mec JR . If factory rounds I would have the gun looked at by a smith since something is wrong or ask how often do you clean the gas system.

Just an update I went to look at a gold that turned out to bee a sp 10 that sold 15mins before I got there. Thanks for the tips any more would be apreciated. Is the ithaca worth looking at I saw one on ee but thought price was a bit Hi. Thanks again guys
