Browning Hi-Power - how good is this gun

love or hate them, they seem to be getting more popular these days. I wanted one since I was 8. took me 35 years to finally buy one. Picked up a standard in 2018 as soon as I heard they were discontinued. It was worth every penny.

My biggest complaint other then the ones we had were worn to #### was. None of the controls were really glove friendly.

I had a FN and a FEG and never really had issues with those, but those were range guns.

Copy that, though the Inglis guns in the CAF had 1940's era controls and operators back then didn't wear gloves most of the time.

Modern versions of the hi power have ambi controls, bigger tabs on the safety and slide release, etc.

What they don't have is a double action first shot, so will never be as easy to bring into action as guns like the Sig or Glock.

For range duty though, no e if that matter much unless it's you IPSC or idpa gun.

So you’re basing your opinion on the oldest, most used, and least cared for samples of the design? Hardly fair.

Give a Glock, P226, Beretta 92, etc. to an undertrained soldier, feed it a steady diet of NATO SMG 9mm, and don’t replace the magazines for 50 years. Get back to me on how they perform. My bet, any gun treated the way CF Hi-Power’s have been will be riddled with problems.

Again, have to ask, how are the controls not glove friendly? I wear gloves to shoot in the winter. Haven’t noticed the HP being harder to operate than anything else. The trigger guard is slightly smaller than the Glock I suppose, but certainly not to the point of being a problem. The safety on the Inglis, and all Mk1’s & 2’s, was certainly a pain but was corrected on the Mk3.

Well for starters, any pistols today. The only control needed is the trigger itself. (Glock, m&p, etc) and you can safely carry them with a round chambered.

I love the HP as a range gun, but not as a work gun. These days it's a no brainer to go striker fired if you're going to be downrange.

The Browning high-power is a great gun, but it shouldn't be your only gun. It fits me like a handshake from a friend, is plenty accurate, points intuitively, I like the way the MkIII version rounded hammer taps the web of my hand every shot letting me know its there. The only negative I can really say about it are the sights, they suck, they work fine, but they are 1935 typical type sights, and they suck by today's standards.

Despite what others have said, you can carry it safely in condition one (chambered), the safety is a bit small is all. Perhaps not in the Army, but that's a policy thing, the pistol is able to be carried in condition one.

I don’t believe it’s drop safe and I find the beavertail just a bit too short, but I still have a soft spot for the BHP mostly due to the cool factor and due to it being a standard in Commonwealth armed forces.

Honestly, if my life depended on it and I had the choice to carry a modern striker fired polymer gun or BHP then I’d likely choose the striker fired gun. However, most people only use their pistols for plinking or competition. If I’m ever in a situation where my life in in danger then I’m grabbing a long gun (see signature).

A firing pin block was incorporated in the Mk 3. Drop safe.

LOve the design - was thinking of getting one of the new ones before this new nonsense. Love my INglis. AS said before it all in the mags - good mags and it runs flawless, Accurate, easy to shoot - for me. Only mods I would do is larger safety lever and get rid of the mag safety. Its actually fairly compact for a gun originally designed for a 13rnd mag.
