Evening all,

If you had to choose between a Browning Micro Midas or Ruger Hawkeye Compact (in 308) which would be your preference and why? This will be for a younger, small-framed shooter. I will be handloading reduced loads so recoil is not an issue.

Other recommendations for a lightweight 308 other than the two mentioned would also be welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Ruger is a little lighter, 3.5 inches shorter. A bit easier for smaller folke to hold it. 110gr mouse fart loads is easy on em and fun for old guys.

I love both the ruger hawkeyes and the xbolts. Rugers, in my opinion are a bit more accurate with factory ammo, browning's fit and feel a little better to me. I like the detachable mag as well. Cant go wrong with either.

Browning is more user friendly for a new/young shooter. Plus they offer the "Growth Program" with all Midas firearms.
Winchester M70 FeatherWeight Compact may also be a good choice.
Personally I would choose 7mm-08 over 308,.. a little less recoil with equal or better results.

I have a tikka t3 compact in .308 and love it. It has a removable 2.5”butt section that allows you to adjust length. And it’s very accurate also!!

I would have bought one of the Ruger compacts but didn’t care for the barrel length. For myself the shorter barrel is not worth the added noise and muzzle blast, some people may not find it to be an issue though.

Well, landed a deal on a Ruger compact in 243 today, so decided to go with that. I think she'll be happy. :)

I know where there is a heck of a deal on a fresh one in 308 if you decide to change cartridges. But I think the 243 is the ideal cartridge for a small framed new shooter.

Yep, but hearing protection and reduced loads will help with that. She's also not a new shooter - she shoots bigger stuff off the bench - it's just that she needs something light for carrying and shooting offhand.

I have a Frontier.358 and a Mark 2 308 both 16.5” barrelled, they are super accurate and very nice to carry.
