I have a browning model 81 with a failure to fire problem ,seems like the firing pin strikes are not hard enough to activate the primer .I have read some info on this rifle and anyone familiar with the model 81 knows its unlike most others as it is assembled with pins and as a complicated gear mechanism in it lever action and a rotating gear type bolt head similar to the ross rifle.
What im wondering is could the problem be that it simply needs to be disassembled and cleaned, or could the firing pin be broken.I have never disassembled one of these before and was wondering is there anyone out there with knowledge about the model 81 browning that could maybe give me a few pointers as to how to procede

I own and reload for one 2009 manufacture. What is the exact problem? Not firing at all or just reloads? Mine will only fire factory and federal primed brass. The system is definitely not service friendly. There are a couple of guys on CGN that have successfully worked on them; they recommend you send them to be worked on by someone who knows/wants to work on them.

the rifle had a failure to fire wile moose hunting, fired the first round and would not fire anymore, tought it might be the ammo bought it home and tried new ammo with the same resultes.I loaded a primer in a empty case and it detnonated the primer no problem. When your rifle is cocked is the fireing pin sticking out the rear of the bolt a little or is it recessed a little. The rifle i have has the hammer end of the fireing pin recessed in the bolt when cocked i would have tought it would be sticking out the rear of the bolt a little, also the strike on the primer seems weak

Ouff moose hunting if it's going to fail that will be the time. Looking at mine in front of me there should be the blued pin and a steel bushing surrounding it. Both are independently spring loaded and protrude about 1/8" total. As for the capped brass mine did the very same thing. Sorry if none of this helps but it sounds alot like the battle I had this summer.

well then without even taking this rifle apart i can see that when the rifle is cocked the firing pin is not protruding from the rear of the bolt ,its just the opposite its recessed into the rear of the bolt so im thinking its a firing pin problem. The question is to take it down and repair it or send it to a dealer.

Might not be the problem as Weasels gun sounds like "rebounding hammer" gun and yours may have been manf. before a changeover to that style. Lots of guns with a "floating" firing pin do not protrude out the back until a cartridge case is involved to push the pin back. I don't know if Browning uses the Miroku style of rebounding hammer but all the Winchester Miroku's I've seen have them.
