Hi I was hoping I could get some information and opinions on a few different rifles. I am looking a buying a hunting rifle for deer, moose, elk, possibly black bear. Calibers that I have been looking at are 270, 7mm and 30-06.

I was looking at browning a bolt, savage with accutrigger or savage axis xp and throwing In a Timney trigger.

Any feedback would be great

Cheers

Both are good,if you like Browning have a look a the x-bolt,mine is accurate and it handle very well. They also gone down in price this year.

My A-Bolt in 30-06 has taken most of my big game, but if you're going to be fiddling with it I reccomend the Savage. A couple friends of mine shoot them and do at least as well as me with guns costing half as much and more customizable.

As for your cartridge, the 30-06 will give the best load diversity both for handloading and factory offerings, but the 7mmRM shoots flatter and penetrates further. The 270 might limit your range for moose and elk, and doesn't meet ballistics requirements if you ever get a bison draw.

I was leaning more towards the a/x bolt. From the research I hAve done, it appears that the factory trigger is pretty good to begin with and the bolt doesn't rotate a much as the savage. I have been reading about scope clearance issues with savage.

Any thoughts?

Browning has the better magazines, bolt throw. Accuracy is down the middle. Savage is easier to customize.

Browning feels warm to the touch. Savage feels like it belongs in my daughters toy box.

And yes, after owning 3 Savages (all gone now) I could never keep my thumb on the bolt handle. Always had to cycle the bolt with the back of my palm so my thumb wouldn't get wedged between the scope/bolt.

Unless you have huge hands and a way to big scope there shouldn't be any problems with bolt scope clearance. I don't know about the axis as I don't have one but I have several other savages and I prefer them to the brownings in everything but looks.

Either, eyether, or the other is a good choice :D...I gotta soft spot for the Brownings tho. I see some composite stalkers on sale in NB for 599.99...270, 30-06 and 300 WM...great deal!

-Between my x-bolt and axis, the x-bolt feels better when working the bolt, and doesnt have any clearance issues with optics(the savage just barely misses my scope, and like mentioned earlier, you can't keep your thumb on the bolt, if that's what you like to do)).

-The x-bolt stock is more solid and I like the palm swell. The axis has a plastic thumb safety slider, and mine has trouble ejecting, but I'm sure mine was a dud.

-the trigger that came on my x-bolt is pretty sweet.

-Between the X-bolt and axis, for me it would be no contest, but the price difference is pretty big, it's why I took a chance on the axis when I wanted a .223.(hopefully when it gets back from the shop, the axis will be working alright)
