A friend of mine has an older Browning 308 with a Sako Action. The stock is cracked, and he would like to locate and different stock for it.
I told him I would help him out, so here I am. I don't know a lot about the rifle or Sako/Browning Rifles. From what I have read they were built in the mid to late 60's, and possibly on Sako L579 actions. Would a Sako L579 stock work on this rifle?
Any info or leads to a stock would be appreciated.

A 308 will be an L579 action. A stock from an AII action will also fit. There might be slight differences in the barrel channels as I believe the Brownings had different barrel contours than the Sakos in some cases.

There are some factory L579/AII stocks on eBay right now.

I know the Sako small ring action that Browning used does not have integeral rings, these are the early one's, and I would believe you will have to fit it to an L579 or AII stock in the action area as well as the barrell channel! Hard to know till you have both in hand?

The other option send gun with cracked stock, to a stocksmith with a stockduplicator, and have him used the old stock as a pattern, won't be cheap, better off seeing if a fibre glass stock is available?

good luck!

Thanks,
Any other information about these rifles would be appreciated.
I check ebay, they is one that sounds right, but of course won't ship to Canada.

How bad is the damage? Browning put beautiful stocks on these rifles and I would be inclined to have it repaired by a true stockmaker, rather than put a Sako stock on it. I have one in 243 and it is one of the nicest wood stocks I own. The 308 is not known to be abusive on stocks so a properly done repair would be barely noticeable and should hold up just fine.
