I just bought the wife and I some browning silver hunters (mine is a 3" 12ga and she gets the Micro Midas 3" 20ga), these our are first shotguns and will be used for clays mostly (just fun stuff nothing serious). I am wondering if any sort of break-in period is required? I have searched all over the internet and have not really found a solid answer yet.

Thanks!

To clarify, I have read that some semi-autos perform better if there is a box of heavy shells run through them first. That is what i mean by breaking them in.

You don’t require break-in for a Silver... just go shoot... doesn't matter if it is a light target load or a 3" heavy field load... it will shoot them all flawlessly. Older technology inertia guns sometimes required a break in... doesn't apply here.

Give it an initial cleaning and re-lubing and then go blast away. Mine was caked in some pretty intense stuff when I first pulled it out of the box so I took that off to not get it everywhere. My friend took an SX3 straight out of the box and proceeded to fire 1,000 shells through it in a weekend and it didn't malfunction once, or since so don't worry.

Ive got a Silver and gave it no break in with heavy shells and she never misses a beat until it gets dirty, after about 200 shells or so.

i had a silver for my 1st shot gun..the fore arm wood cracked the 3rd time i had it out goose hunting with 3 1/2 inch shells.
.but it shot very nice anyway.it was prob just a flawed peice of wood.browning came good for me and it was replaced with a maxus

I've shot a Silver for waterfowl and for some clays for the past 6 years, and have never had an issue cycling down to 7/8oz target loads. Mine is a 3.5" model as well.

Shoot it!

Just start burning ammo......that's the break in!! I had one a few years ago, a 3.5" 12ga MODB version. I put 1500 target rounds through it the month before duck season started. Never an issue with any ammo put through it, ever! Enjoy your new shotguns, congrats!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I managed to get out twice with the 20ga and once with the 12ga over the weekend. I think there is about 100 shells through the 20 and 50 through the 12 by now and no issues with either (all Winchester AA target loads). The wife and I are trying to get out for some lessons in the next week or so to get our skill level up.

The 20ga came fairly clean and required minimal clean up but the 12ga was soaked in oil which I found odd but they are all good to go now.

Thanks again.

I just bought the 20 today. Can't wait to get out and try it. I was looking for break in info as well so thanks for finding out for me :)

Mine is a 12 ga. 3.5", 26" barrel version and first time out with 3" heavy hunting loads I experienced 2 problems with feeding on a new round into the chamber after the first shot. The shell never quite made it all the way out of the magazine. Worse yet, there were big Canada Geese about 25 yds off the end of the barrel.
I plan on taking it out tomorrow to put 50-100 rounds through it to see if it settles down. I'll report back.
