Found a take-down .22, always wanted one, the price seems decent ($300), it is in great shape, with the exception that is is old, early 50's I think. Looks like the magazine loads from the top of the stock opposed to the side like a current Browning.
Any experience with these? I am looking for a decent gun that is packable, and the Browning feel well made.
Thanks

Early 50's would be an FN rifle (Fabrique national)

I think Browning was having them make them well prior to the little takedown we know being assigned to them with the Browning side loading stock in about 1954 being the first year.

FN may have developed the top loader or made it under licence from Browning. What are the markings on the barrel or receiver. I have seen a few marked "Brownings' patent"

I had one with a small forewood.
Bottom eject.
It was the take down model.
Only issue with it was trying to keep the adjustment
on focus for the head space.
There was is an adjustment ring and the one I had seemed
to move if I wasn't careful with taking it apart.
I couldn't find any info parts related for this old gal.
Worked like a hot dang otherwise.
To turn back the clock, it would still be here......

Is there a model number on this gun? Check to see if this is a Browning or Browning's Patent rifle. Remington built TD rifles on the Browning Patent.

Are you sure that the cartridges load on the top of the stock? That feature does not sound familiar to me.

If it loads on top, it is an older rifle. This isn't a problem if it is in good order, thay are well made. $300? A nice Browning would probably sell for this. I have two, they are usably accurate. Nice guns.

I don't have the gun yet, picking it up tomorrow. The markings definitely say "Browning", with other things. I will post more details when I grab it tomorrow. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a gun known for issues.

i think this is the exact same gun i looked at last week! i almost bought it but there are no grooves for scope mount, and the rear iron sight was slightly bent.. nice little gun though, good luck with it!

Bought it.
Says:
"Fabruque nationale d'armes de guerre s.a. Herstal belgique. Brownings patent depose."
Any thoughts?

top loader

Yes as I stated earlier an FN toploader.
They seem quite dependable and accurate but I guess my biggest concern would be in lack of parts if something ever wears out. (usually the extractors).
