I borrowed an A-bolt 300 WM from a friend and shot my first deer over the weekend. It was an awesome experience and I'm looking forward to getting my first rifle now.

Bass Pro has both the X-bolt and A-bolt on for $499 right now (black synthetic stalk with a blued barrel), and I am wondering which gun do people prefer. I have read that the trigger might be better on the x-bolt.

If you were buying, which would you get and why?

I prefer my X-Bolt. The trigger, stock, and scope mount holes are nicer than any of the A-Bolts I've owned. The magazine is also 100x better than the removable floor plate crap that A-Bolts have.

I own a couple of A-bolts nice rifles. As I understand it they are being discontinued, they may not be but that is the roomer. The X-bolt is definitely nicer, better mag.

I've got a custom 25-06 built on the A-Bolt. I'm sure that the X-Bolt is nice, but I find the magazine to be ugly (I don't like how much bottom metal shows on the sides) and I'm not a big fan of a DBM in general. I've never heard of an A-Bolt that wouldn't shoot but I haven't heard anything bad about the X either. The stock on the X-Bolt looks pretty chunky through the pistol grip to my eye. I prefer a more open pistol grip, but that's me. I'm also not terrified of opening the action with the safety off. Seems that asking someone to take the safety off to open the action and unload is tantamount to asking them to juggle babies while tightrope walking across the Grand Canyon these days.

All that said, for $499 I don't think that you can go wrong.

I have both i prefer the a bolt. The xbolt has a better magazine system and i could adjust the trigger where i wanted but i like the more oldfashioned a bolt trigger better once i changed the trigger spring, easy and cheap. The x bolt appears cheaper to make although quality looks equaly good on both. Cant say why i like the a bolt as the xbolt seems to make more sense

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll go check them both out and see which I prefer, but it sounds like they are both great guns.

Never handled an x-bolt, but I have a stainless a-bolt II in .270WSM and I love it. I like the Duratouch stock, gun fits me real well, and its very accurate.

I like how the browning xbolt I handled had the hogue grip panels where needed, a complete hogue stock like on my howa is sometimes has too much grip in places not needed.

I have the x bolt in 300wsm sweet gun
Trigger is great
If i do my job with berger bullets reloads with imr4350 my bullets will touch each other at 100 yards.
I like the detach mag seems to work flawless so far
The stainless seems easy to scratch but i hunt with mine
