Browning Xbolt SS 7 mm Stripped screws.(update: not good :))

I have a Browning Xbolt SS 7mm.
It's a few months old and has 100 rounds through it.

While mounting a 20 MOA rail ,I stripped out the two front threads.


Any input on its value would be greatly appreciated.

I mounted a 20 MOA rail ,purchased from ATRS.

Inserted all 8 screws, in the patern recommended by Browning.
Snugged all screws first,then torqued to 22 inch pounds.

Only one stripped.

But as I were removing the screws, the other front screw stripped as well.

If I have it tapped and rethreaded, will it still hold its original value?
 
Something isn't right. Perhaps wrong thread on your screws. I think gunsmiths charge about $25 per hole so figure on that at least. In addition I suspect you will now have to go to oversized screws. Take it to a smith, get it fixed properly and then sell it.

The screws for the x bolts are two different lengths, the four screws for the back mount are the longest. if you mix up the screws you will strip the threads.
Get a smith to fix it, disclose the issue when you sell it. You will definitely take a loss as the 2 retapped holes will be different screw size which isn't desirable at all.
 
The good news is you don't need all 8 screws... the other good news is a smith can drill the stripped hole slightly deeper and run a bottoming tap in and with a full length screw this may work.

The screws with my Browning rings (talley) are what you say.

But the screws that came with my Browning 20 MOA rail, are all the same size.

I'm totally disappointed,just cost me $1500 all in.

I'm going to start a new thread in gunsmithing,
See if I can get this figured out.

Guntech ,tell me what you think ,about using an oversized 6-48 tap and die
 
I don't see how the front screws could strip the receiver though.
As you can see the barrel threads ?at the bottom of the hole.

So wouldn't a longer screw, just bring up in that? And then torque out at 22 inch pounds?

I know in wouldn't tighten the base,but it should still stop at the barrel thread,
 
The screws have a taper to them, so when they bottom out on the barrel threads there is very little thread engagement, more torque causes them to strip.
If you get all 8 done to the larger 8-40 you could call it an "upgrade" lol, the bases will need to be opened up for the larger screws as well so make sure to bring them with the gun.
I'm not sure if helicoils would work, or the Brownells repair kit...

I just got back from the gunsmith, he said the shorter screws were not long enough to engage the threads.

And sure enough, when reversed the screws, they all torqued in perfectly.


Whew!!!lol
 
Well,thought I had it all fixed.
But when I torque the two front screws ,they just spin out.

I can screw all the screws into the front female holes, without the bases on.

But as soon as I use the bases,the front screws won't grab.

The only difference I can see in the receiver holes, is that I can see the barrel threads in the front two holes.

So I'm guessing the the screws are bottling out on the barrel threads or the screws are not long enough.

Not long enough makes more sense,as very little thread protrudes out past the bottom of the front mount.
Maybe two or three threads

Is it possible to drill the two front holes a little deeper?
Enough to get a couple more threads to engage.

Would that create more of an issue? Drilling into the barrel threads?
