Bruising? But not my shoulder?

So I've shot trap 3 weeks in a row. (One to two rounds per night with a 20ga and a 12ga. I'm trying out all sorts of different shotguns.) I'm having fun ... even though I'm not hitting much!! *laughing*:D

Anyway - every single week I'm bruising on the underside of my arm. Like if you start at the top of the bicep right in the middle and go down about 3 inches on the underside of my arm. It's about 2" long and 3/4" wide.

I am not hitting myself when I'm mounting the gun - I made sure to pay attention last night after I asked around at the range and stumped everyone.

Any ideas what might be causing it?

Thanks!!

Sounds like an improper mount to me, my wife does that when she shoots my 12s. Maybe fine a gun with a bit more pitch and see if that helps.

I purchased a recoil absorber pad that you wear on your shoulder made by PAST and that worked for me. Just google PAST recoil and you will find it. Good luck.

Is your elbow up or elbow down?
could be a pinch type bruise from the butt stock of the shotgun.
without a picture of your hold I am only speculating.
sooner or later them clays are just going to turn to dust when you get onto them !
Cheers,
Rob

I sometimes get similar bruises to this when I'm wearing a t-shirt or tank top when shooting. My gun has a glossy finish and when I'm a bit sweaty the skin sticks a bit when mounting/dismounting opening/closing the gun. I have discovered using a talc type product helps to prevent this pinching. Maybe this is whats going on, does it happen if your wearing long sleaves? Good luck and have fun!

I certainly did that at first - even if you've got basically good form, in the first while you'll have the odd slip-up and this is a symptom of your arm being down (also of being tense - so do some dry firing before the flinch kicks in too bad!!!).

Elbow out - but of gun in the little pocket in the front of your shoulder that putting your elbow up creates.

Have fun!

I started shooting trap last november and i'm hooked now too.
I found I was bruising similiar to what you are saying it was def. my butt pad. I hadn;'t noticed but it was grabbing me just the wrong way.
once i corrected my hold it went away.
hope you continue to have fun!!!

I've seen quite a bit of it myself. I would think improper mounting to the shoulder. It's pretty common to see bruises on the bottom of the arm below the bicep. If you take a conscious effort to place the butt plate/recoil pad to your shoulder, I think you'll find the bruising will stop on your arms, and you should start noticing it on your shoulder. Elbow up definitely helps.

Silver, where do you shoot trap. I thought the range at EESA was closed?

Are the guns compensated? My 11-87 "scrubs" my shoulder when I use the compensated barrel. Goes away when I use the normal barrel.

I'm shooting at RRG in Blenheim.

There's no bruising at all on my shoulder. It feels a little "stiff" the next day - but there's no bruising ... just on the underside of my arm.

I'm still in the process of figuring out what I want/need in terms of a shotgun - but I've been told that my form looks good. So it must be placement...

Thanks everyone!
