A friend wnts to trage guns with me and his SPS 22-250 has a Brunton high powered variable on it. I realize they are low end but right now can't afford to upgrade it for a while. So, anybody have expereience with these? Are they worth the trouble?

They didn't make rifle scopes, like most brands, they had someone else make them. And they were so successful that now they don't anymore.
I have a 1.5-6x40 Echo. Glass-etched reticle, very impressive clarity for the price, didn't last long on a Handi-Rifle in .308Winchester. Somewhere in the second box of ammo it wouldn't focus at higher than minimum magnification. Lifetime warranty means Brunton says I can send it to them and they will try to fix it but if they can't there are no replacements and they will give me a credit note towards anything else they sell. (They don't happen to sell anything else I want.)
